Mount Washington

I THINK I've never seen this dumas kit mentioned here... Has anyone any
comments on her as a kit or as a finished project?
I've built several boats including some from scratch. But I NEED something to
do!

There is a picture of the Dumas kit in the files
section. I just happened to go to the Dumas website
tonight to look for a possible project and they have
the Mount Washington there. It's a fairly expensive
kit but comes with all fittings unlike some of their
other kits where the fittings etc. are all extra. The
Mount Washinton is a very attractive looking side
wheeler but the only thing I have ever read about her
is that she seems a little top heavy and rolls quite a
bit when making a turn, if you would plan to sail her.
That's about all I know about this model. Maybe
someone else has more information.

Right on, George.

"Mount Washington" is indeed a lovely and impressive model and I have
first hand experience of two of them built by Club Members here in
Victoria. As a static model she is breathtaking and Dumas should be
congratulated on producing a fine kit...howeverrrr and this is what
you were refering to...It's quite possible if you construct her
superstructure with the material from the kit you could end up with
this top hamper problem which makes her lean over in turns and which
persists up until you back off the throttle. She has very little
draft and uses one engine for both paddle wheels and can be rather
unstable. I have heard of wild elaborate underwater rigs to stabilize
the model but my own belief is that if the superstructure is built
light enough and the weight kept DOWN LOW (the hull actually has
very little draft) there is no reason why this should not be an eye
catching and realistic performer on the water.
