Hi Gang!

It just occurred to me it might be useful for others to know what
books I have in my little "Paddler" Library so that if anyone needs
research info I can look things up..or give information about the
book..feel free to do the same, as there a number of books I too
would like to find out more about.

So there it is..it's a beginning and I try to add at least one new
paddler book a month from my "wish list" of almost 80 books !

Now if ONLY I had time to READ them instead of looking at only the
pictures!

Both books are long since out of print, I am sure. They describe many of
the steamboats used on the prairie rivers and lakes of Western Canada. In
addition to the usual river problems of shallow water, snags and shifting
channels, there was the problem of ice in the rivers and lakes of this
region. There are several vintage photographs in both books, but no
drawings. Both books include detailed accounts of the "naval engagement"
fought on the South Saskatchewan River near Batoche in 1885 during the Riel
Rebellion. Armed with thirty-five riflemen, one cannon, and her top speed
of five miles per hour, the "Northcote" sailed into battle with two barges
in tow. Rebel riflemen in rifle pits on both shores of the river under the
command of Gabriel Dumont kept the men on the "Northcote" pinned down, and
the cannon was never fired, as far as I can tell. The rebels lowered the
ferry cable at Gabriel's Crossing, and snagged the "Northcote's"
smoke-stack, spars, mast and whistle, but fortunately missed the wheelhouse.
It was a near thing, and she withdrew downriver while General Middleton's
forces fought the Battle of Batoche. General Middleton wisely decided to
confine later use of steamboats to transporting troops and supplies.

Thank you so much for that fascinating little insight into the
paddlers of Saskatchewan (that's Canada, folks!)...we tend to
overlook these and think only of the British Columbia ones. Your
account of the "Nortcote" engagement literally sent chills down my
spine..I love these stories of these incredibly intrepid ships and
crews. I particularly liked this bit...

Lurk no more, Robert...and please continue to share stories and
information from those two special books you have and especially any
material you have on Alberta and Saskatchewan paddlers. I'm going to
keep an eye out for these, as you've whetted my appetite to find out
more.

Yes both books are out of print but it's still possible to obtain
good copies on the used book market.

STEAMBOATS on the SASKATCHEWAN - 8 copies currently available in
Canada at an average of US$28.00 with a high of $45.00 and low of
$20.00.

FIRE CANOE - 24 copies currently available worldwide at an average of
US$23.00 with a low of $9.00 and a high of $45.00. I have just
located a very nice copy here in Victoria at US$10.00 which I am
picking up this afternoon.

So thank you again for contributing these titles which will go into
the "Paddleducks Library" database David is preparing. Please let us
know of any other books which deal particularly with paddlers from
Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. Thanks and have a fine weekend
