Can anyone identify this ship?
« on: March 01, 2015, 07:09:24 PM »
I grew up in a town called Havre de Grace in Maryland. (USA) I have always been interested in the history of the town and especially the history of the railroad through it. I have been collecting pictures of one of the railroad bridges across the Susquehanna River and came across this drawing. This is the first railroad bridge that was built in 1866 made of wood by the Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore RR. It was later replaced by a steel span in 1874.
I started looking at the detail of the pic and noticed the paddle wheeler towing some kind of "barges" upriver. I have been trying to find information on this scene but to no avail. I tried to identify the paddle wheeler, also. The closest I have come is the USS Calhoun. (Hard to tell) The paddle wheeler is interesting to see in this pic but then I noticed what looks to be a double turreted ironclad being towed behind it. (also hard to tell) Looks to be a "Monadnock Class" Ironclad.
 Thoughts?
