Clinker built side paddle tug

Hi David!

Well done, excellent job explaining your next project.
You've got ME excited about it too..a clinker built sidewheel paddle
tug..delightful!!!

As you say...first thing is to get plans of one. Once you have settled
on a handful of vessel names from the Thomas book, you might wish to
contact the Maritime Museum at Greenwich as they purportedly have
plans for almost every British vessel ever built. I've looked for
plans for this type of tug but cannot find anything on the net.

Our member in Portugal, Christian <christian@xangrila.pt> is currently
researching the "Great Eastern" and recently obtained plans and
rigging diagrams from Greenwich. These are not cheap, but Christian
will be able to fill you in as to how he went about getting the GE
plans. (Actually, Christian, I think a few of us here would also be
interested in this process as this may be the only alternative for
plans for many British paddlewheelers!)

So far as actually making a clinker hull, I believe there is a bit of
a knack to it ( don't think the planks are constant width) but
Paddleduck Dave Powell here in Victoria BC, has built a lovely clinker
fishing boat and I'm sure would be pleased to pass on information.
Also very close at hand is the SMF (Ship Modelers Forum on Yahoo
groups) with about 700 members, these people are really into wooden
ship models.

The book you are refering to, British Steam Tugs by P.N. Thomas is
currently available from three sources in the UK and one in the US but
I have not found it used at less than £25.00 sterling and as high as
£40.

In any case..do keep us posted on your progress.
