PT Lingdale
« on: June 10, 2013, 05:24:16 AM »
I am a new member and have a specific interest in the PT Lingdale.  This tug was the Lady Vita when it was owned by the Dover Harbour Board and my Grandfather was the Master of the tug from 1908 to 1914.

I would like to obtain a model of the tug. Does anyone know of one for sale?

If I can't buy one I will have to build one and I know that Clyde Model Boats are still selling some of the parts but it could be discontinued very soon.

I know from an old thread that Eddy Matthews was building the PT Lingdale.  I would like to know how difficult it would be to build a Clyde Model Kit bearing mind I am a novice.  Are special tools required?  How long would it take?  Can it be steam powered?

These are pretty basic questions but I would appreciate some advice.

Roger

Hi Roger,

Welcome to Paddleducks....

My model of the PT Lingdale is still only about 1/3 built due to moving home down to sunny North Yorkshire.... I do hope to make some more progress with it soon.

I wouldn't consider it to be a beginners model - Though that really depends on your basic skills! The paddlewheels are a work of art, but you do need to have some metalworking experience to assemble them as there is a fair amount of fine soldering involved. And as it isn't a full kit, you need to make various bits and pieces yourself from the drawings that are supplied with the hull....

It's certainly possible to make a steam powered model, but I'll be using electric as my preferred method of powering it.

Regards
Eddy

Thanks Eddy,

I have asked Clyde for a quote on the bits they can supply and will then give it futher thought and conntact you again.

One issue that is of concern is that I really want to model the Lady Vita and you will see from the photo attached that the superstructure was quite different to the PT Lingdale. The Lady Vita spent her life in the Channel and towing vessels off the Goodwin Sands and required much more protection for the crew.  Obviously less protection was needed when she worked on the River Tees and the superstructure was simplified.

regards

Roger
