Empress of India, Leith
« on: June 03, 2011, 11:11:52 PM »
Please see attached a rather poor scan of this PS in Whitby harbour in 1903...photo published in the Whitby Gazette 3 June 2011.

Does anyone have any information on this vessel?

Many Thanks.......Bernie

The details state she was a screw tug so there must have been more than one.
I've found some pictures of a model of the screw tug here:-  http://www.vallejogallery.com/item.php?title=Dockyard+Model+of+British+Tugboat++EMPRESS+OF+INDIA&artist=Felix+ZIEM&id=2281

The P.N. Thomas book mentions a paddle tug Emperor of India built by J&M Gunn 1877 for W. & H. R. Strong of Cardiff.
No details I'm afraid just a sketch of the paddlebox side showing the decoration.

Also in the book (page 46) it shows a picture of the; Dunrobin built by J&W Gunn of Cardiff for White, Edwards & Jenkins of Cardiff.
She is seen here at Scarborough where she was owned by G.A Smith & J. Douglas who had a big fleet of paddle trawlers

Think I've found what you are looking for in a somewhat unlikely place.    ;D

Have a read:-  http://archiver.rootsweb.ancestry.com/th/read/Mariners/2005-08/1123404907

I suspect it was at Whitby being used as a paddle trawler.
