Bert's update from the Kootenays
« on: June 13, 2005, 04:50:19 PM »
For new members who havn't met Bert yet, he is our resident "Canadian
Pacific Inland Fleet" expert and model ship builder extraordinaire.
He's built museum quality and R/C operating models of just about
every sternwheeler of CP's Inland fleet. His superb models of
sternwheelers and tugs are featured in a number of Museums and on
Summer display aboard the sternwheeler "S.S. Moyie" which is under
restoration at Kaslo, British Columbia.

Do have a look at Bert and his models in our photo section, entitled

Hi Bert...thanks so much for the news update. Always a pleasure to
hear from you, and best of the New Year to you too! Great job on
the "H.M.S. FORMIDABLE" diorama...really enjoyed the pictures. The
project must have been a nice temporary break from paddlers as it's
always good to have a bit of variety in modeling!

> Paul, I have a picture record of construction of the S.S. KOKANEE,
> the ship inside Bob Turner's book cover. This is B&B or sandwich or
> layered type. If you think they would be useful I could make a two
> page document for the files.

Yes, Bert...I would love to have this record in our files so those
contemplating static model sternwheelers can see how you've built
yours. You can place it in:

Please holler if you need any help.

> There is a story behind this, Good Earth Productions of Toronto, a
> film producer of things like Canadian Parks, came out here last
> July to do a one hour documentary of the early transportation of
> the Kootenays. I was contacted about my models and wanted to film
> how it all came about.

...and about time too somebody did a documentary on this remarkable
period of Canadian pioneer history, as it was the sternwheelers and
their talented crews that truly cemented the national fabric of
Canada. PLEASE keep us up to date on the airing of the documentary
and the possibility of obtaining a VHS copy which would be good to
combine with one of Bob (Turner's) lectures to our Club in Victoria.
I know that our PD member, Ron (Wild) in Kelowna BC, will also be
interested in this for his Club too.

> My mane ambition this spring is to build a two cylinder osilating
> steam engine and boiler then make another tug to put it in.

This sounds like another fascinating project. Which tug are you
considering installing the steam engine in? I'm assuming she'll be
one of the beautiful CP tugs, so do please keep us up to date on your
progress. Have you thought about a "live steam" set up for one of
your big R/C sternwheelers?

> By the way Paul I have models in several museums and if you would
> like the information let me know.

Yes I would, please. I'm trying to develop a file on your models as
part of my own database which would list all your models and the
museums they can be seen in. So just send me a list when you get a
moment. Looking forward to hearing more from you, Bert, and as
always, best regards to everyone at Kaslo and the "Inland Fleet"!
