David Allinson and PT Scotia
« on: July 19, 2010, 02:33:09 AM »
Some of our long term members may remember David Allinson and his build of the PT Scotia, which all started many years ago when we were on Yahoo....

I received an email from David yesterday to say he'd eventually finished the model and was displaying it at a local exhibition in Spain. So here's the model and it's proud owner....

Regards
Eddy

Hi

a well build model doubtless. But a question may be allowed: The "Scotia" seems to be a tugboat. I presume, the hull was made of iron or steel and not of wood.
I am right or not?

greetings

Tom

Hi Tom

Scotia was a very early WOODEN clinker built tug boat. The first paddle tugs were built of wood, mostly in the North East of Britain and on the Clyde - sometimes without drawings to traditional designs.

By the 1820s wood paddle tugs were not uncommon and they continued in service till well into the 1880s and beyond. The first Iron tugs appeared around the mid 1840s but did not become common until the 1860s and gradually eclipsed wooden built vessels.

Scotia was built in 1863

Hope this helps

All the best

Stuart
