Hi all,
Great site, very interesting stuff!
I wonder if anyone can help me regarding acryllic/enamel paints.
My previous models have been smaller scale paddlers, 1:96, of the static variety, and have been painted with humbrol enamels/varnish, by brush.
I have now moved on to my 1st floating effort (sorry not paddler) and i have been considering painting the hull using "halfords" acryllic primer sprays. Does anyone know a varnish (matt or prefer satin) that can be used over the acryllic sprays?
I have been told enamel can go over acryllic, but not the other way round, so i wonder if humbrol varnish could be used, brushed over the halfords.... my other option is just to go with the humbrol enamels, maybe safer!!
On the subject of paints, i have been trying the humbrol acryllic tinlets, on scrap, to see if i liked them. They cover well, but i emailed humbrol to enquire about whether their acryllic paint/varnish is waterproof, and they didnt recomend use on hulls, or parts immersed in water. seems it is just water resisting, not proof..
If anyone has any advice, i'd be most grateful

I have never had any problems using acrylic over enamel primer or enamel over acrylic primer (been using them for about 10 years). I haven't used acrylic for boat hulls though. - the small tins don't cover much. I have used halfords paint for 4 boat hulls now without a problem. there is a great range of colours on offer. If your top coat will be acrylic it would be better to use a satin or gloss varnish over the top. Halfords also do a spray lacquer that is supposed to be for alloy wheels, but is great for boat hulls and does not 'yellow' with age. It is also very durable for hulls that will be in the water.

Also try this site for different aerosol paints. It is for cars but works fine on hulls. They can supply any colour you need.

Thanks for the advice, I have gone for the halfords sprays,  picked up a couple of aerosol tins recently, am going to have a practice on some scrap first. The red oxide colour seems just right for underbody. just waiting for the weather to get a bit warmer to do the painting in the garage!
