Reversing an electric motor.
« on: March 05, 2009, 08:56:52 AM »
Hi,
This is a response to the discussion on the drive system for the USS Wolverine posted last year. it is a little out of date now,but might be of use in the future.
Most model electric motors are designed to run anti clockwise when viewed from the pinion end, and are timed accordingly with a certain amount of advance, which can be as high as high as 30 degrees in some of the racing stock motors - this increases the speed and of course the current draw. As a consequence, the motors do not run as well or as fast in reverse, however, with a little care it is relatively easy reverse the rotation with the correct degree of advance. To do this carefully lever the fixing lugs up on the bell end with a small screwdriver and then rotate the whole bell end through 180 degrees, then tap the lugs back down to fix the end in position again. Take care not to pull the end bell off during the operation otherwise you will pull the brushes off the commutator - this is not the end of the world, but unless you are familiar with stripping motors, manoeuvring the brushes over the fibre washer on the end of the commutator can be a bit of a fiddle.
  I hope this is useful.

Keith.

p.s. I am building a small, quarter wheeler using a worm gear. When the paddles are in forward motion, both motors are rotating in the same sense, in this case clockwise (reverse), but the degree of advance in these motors is so small it is of no consequence. I enclose a few pictures of the business end.
