New links for Great Lakes vessels
« on: March 15, 2008, 10:06:00 AM »
Hello PD's,
For those interested in vessels that traversed the waters of the Great Lakes of North America, a couple of new links have been added. Not having a whole lot to contribute to PD, I thought you might be as interested as I am in these two websites as I find myself visiting them often in researching that "next project".
First up is The Historical Collection of the Great Lakes. Whenever I run across a vessel that was built upon the Great Lakes, I use this website to find out her specs and where she was built. Along with searching by name, you can also search by official registry number, type of rig, various size options, etc. Once I've established the shipyard where she was built, I go to the next website, The Great Lakes Historical Society. The link should take you to the plans section. From there you can look up a number of the major shipyards to see what plans are available from the GLHS. A few of the links to the shipyards are not yet active, but you'll find that some of the largest yards are available. Many of the plans for the sidewheel "Floating Grand Palaces" of the Great Lakes can be purchased through the GLHS. Of particular interest to PD's, are a number of the vessels built at the Detroit Dry Dock Co. and Detroit Ship Building Co. At the top of the shipyard chart, look for the category "rig". Drop down until you find one that says "Steamer" or "Sidewheel Passenger" and you'll usually find a paddle driven vessel.

Enjoy,
Randy the Dinosaur Soup Man
