Since there seems to have been some offense taken that I haven't yet taken the time to formally introduce myself, I think I probably should.
My name's Mac, I'm 29 & live in Brisbane Queensland. My interest in paddlesteamers is focused primarily on the Murray River. I first became aware of these fascinating vessels when I saw All The Rivers Run at the age of 6. My original interest became an obsession, which has tempered a little with age.
Over the past 20 years I've done a lot of research. My information has come from books, online resources (I'm extremely good at identifying unnamed boats in pictures, etc - I had a lot of free time as a kid), trips to the river & making acquaintences who are involved with the boats.
In 1996 I managed to acquire the remains of the Excelsior of 1873 with the intent of salvage & restoration. Although the hull should be in reasonable condition, age has taught me that it's unlikely I can complete this project. I still think it's pretty cool to own the boat though! My hope, now, is to build a much smaller steel hulled vessel & maybe take a year to travel the river.
These days I don't have as much contact with people on the river & the boats as I'd like. It's amazing how as you get older the responsibilities & financial obligations pile up.
