P&A Campbells - Help!

Hi Everybody

Just wondering if anyone out there knows anything about the colour scheme(s) used in the engine rooms, and passages either side of the engine rooms on the P&A Campbell ships of the Bristol Channel.

I am half way through a long (and slow) running design project for several of these ships, am doing well on the G/A, hull lines and deck  houses/fittings, the colours for the outside are well documented, but the only pictures I can find of the engine rooms and interious are black and white.

Currently nearly completion on the drawing board at 1:32 scale, from original builders drawings, is the Westward Ho/Cambria duo and the nearly identical Britannia and trailing behind them is the Cardiff Queen and Bristol Queen, with Devonia/Lady Moyra following them, and others to follow one day!

Very grateful for any assistance concerning any of these ships!

Unfortunately I cannot personally cannot assist in your enquiry, about the colour scheme of the ships of P & A Campbell.

But it may be worth contacting the local newspaper, the (Bristol) EVENING POST, web-site = http://www.epost.co.uk/.

Sometimes folk from all over the world write in for information, or to renew links with folk from their past. The letter is then published in the paper to ask for anybody to help with the enquiry. This way your question would in this way be seen by a wider and more local readership that possible by the Paddleduck members/guests alone.

It is noticed that a local lady (Shirley Gorst) had written her reminiscences in a book "Trips down Memory Lane", and on the front is a B&W picture of PS Ravenswood (launched 1891, scrapped 1955).

The picture was sourced by another local contact known as Bygone Bristol (more info on http://www.bygonebristol.co.uk/ ).

PS the local paper was mentioned because it may be read by local  folk who were actually part of the crews of the vessels operated by P & A Campbell. These people would obviously have first-hand on-board experience.

Hi Andy. The local Heritage centre at Clevedon  have a permanent exhibition of about seven models of Campbells paddlers, but the reason I am mentioning this is that Nigel COOMBES also lives in Clevedon and has written at least two books of pictures of Campbells ships. I am certain that the Heritage centre will have a contact number/address for nigel. I have met Nigel many times on the waverley/ Balmoral and at AGMs and he is one of the old school of natures Gentlemen, very approachable.
  On the theme of ships plans, Have you seen a copy of BARRY RAILWAY STEAMERS byM A TEDSTONE published by the Oakwood press in 2005?. there is an excellent fold out plan of the DEVONIA (ex GWALIA) in the back cover. Stacks of detail on it. Hope this helps. If you get any information please post it cossI NEED TO KNOW AS WELL !!. regards, Walter.

Dont bother looking for Nigels phone number Ive spoken to him and heres the result:

CARDIFF QUEEN:  Engine room French Grey, ( same colour as superstructure) Engine entablature- green. Pipes lagged off white.or polished copper.

 BRISTOL QUEEN: engine room as above. Entablature - black. Pipes lagged off-white.

I have another couple of friends who have life-long knowledge of Cambells to check but both are away. (One lucky*** is sailing down the Mississippi on a   stern wheeler) as soon as I can I will get back if Chris Colard doesnt answer the rest (He is archivist for the paddle steamer preservation society so if he doesnt know, then it is lost forever!!  Regards, Walter.

It's good to see that Walter managed to find the answer to your question Andy :)

Will these drawings be available after you've completed them? I know I'd certainly like to get my hands on them to add to my collection!

Hey

many thanks everyone for all the advise, am busy tryin out everyones suggestions!

im especially pleased with the idea of Bristol Queen having a black entablature, ive often thought how smart that with the white lagging and polished steel would look on a paddler's engine, didnt know campbells had tried it already!

will post more once ive finished this research and let you all know the findings!
