I do it all the time. If you're using ink jet, follow instructions usually supplied by the paper manufacturer on what to set your printer at. It's usually at photo quality or fine print. Usually whatever is a high resolution to make the lines firm with plenty of ink.
Let it dry good, then spray a clear coat of decal film being sure to coat it good. Let that dry and you're ready to cut, soak and slide off into place.
For really nice finishing work use decal setting solution to apply the decal. It softens the decal film and makes it fit around any details like rivets or lines behind it. I usually get my clear coat and setting solution at Micro-Mart. I think they have a starter kit with everything you need.
Remember a laser printer will print on ink jet decal paper, but an ink jet will not print on laser paper. What happens? You get little tiny dots that will rub off on everything, even a couple of days after you printed it. I mistakenly ran one of my laser decal papers through an ink jet one time and that's all it took.
