PS Duchess Of Montrose (1902-1917)

Greetings ,

I'm researching the life of my gt Grandfather who was lost when the Duchess of Montrose was mined and lost near dunkirk in 1917 .

I'd be grateful for any information or photographs of this ship .

A paddle steamer, built in 1902 by John Brown, successors to Thomson at Clydebank/Govan for the Caledonian Steam Packet Company , measured 322 tons, 210 feet x 25 feet.

She was employed in Scottish waters initially on the Ayr station offering cruises on the lower Firth , later spent most of her time upstream on general railway connections until taken over by the Admiralty in May 1915 (Admiralty No 585) and coverted for use as a troopship and later a minesweeper as HMS Montrose / Duchess of Montrose .

Mined and sunk near Gravelines off the French coast on March 18th 1917 .

Thanks in advance .

Hi

I have checked my photos and as yet have not found the 'Montrose' :( .  I shall be in Scotland third week in March, near to the Scottish Maritime Museum archives where I'll try to find a photo or perhaps a drawing or two :) .  Don't get your hopes up too high, they don't have everything.
Cheers from Bob Golder

Hi Ned. one of our own members is a prolific author of books on clyde steamers and the first of his books I looked at CALEDONIAN STEAM PACET COMPANYLTD, BY Alistair Deayton ISBN0 7524 2389 1  has four pictures of the Duchess, one of which shows her on admiralty service. I will trawl through my other books as I feel there are many more references to come! Regards, walter.
Blessed are the "cracked" -for they let in the light for the rest of us.
