Laying decking
« on: November 07, 2005, 03:12:51 AM »
Hi there.
I have finally got around to making some progress with the decking on my model of the mid 1800s paddle tug P.S.Scotia.
I considered many different ways but finally decided to do it the hard way.
I cut a narrow strip (a little wider than the thickness of the plank) of black cartridge paper and stick it to the edge of the plank. I then sand off the excess paper until it is exactly flush on top and bottom. I then stick these planks beside each other directly onto the deck beams. Always of course allowing for the cross joints. Once the whole deck is installed, I will sand the whole thing smooth and rub in some very matt varnish to seal it and stop the water getting too far into the woodwork.
I have loaded a picture of the half finsihed deck into my album.
Hope that it might encourage anyone else who is wondering what to do about making a realistic deck finish. Please contact me if you have any questions regarding this aspect of boat building or any probelms with clinker building. I don't guarantee a fix, but I will try!!
All the best
David

Hi - PD's - David, I went through the re-planking bit with my PS Decoy & in the end used a natural CARNAUBA sealing wax over the lime wood decking - it you wish. send you snail mail address off line & I'll post over a teaspoon full - [ but without the spoon] - or should I say a small quantity - Derek

Oh BTW - I know Spain is in the northern part of the world & so is Canada, so if you see that PJ just mention please whilst I use a black DELL PC, I have retained the white Microsoft intelligent key board & that way its really easy to see if any bits of vegie toast get caught in the keyboard buttons :ohno - Derek

Hi PD's - David - I have both of your posts & yes it will be a pleasure to post over the small parcel of the WAX - the outcome with the WAX application is the best I have achieved in say ten dissapointing decking trials over the past 20 months - the result with the WAX is that the decking looks naturally old & warm without being shiny - & is also super waterproof

I have made the entry in my 2006 day book [Monday 2/1/2006] to post in accordance with your return

Oh & BTW, all PD's will be looking forward to the new 2006 snaps of PS Scotia - regards Derek  :D

Derek.
Thank you very much indeed for your offer of the WAX for the deck.
I would very  much like to take you up on the offer. Sounds better than varnish.

Derek.
Your deck is really super. I hope mine looks even half as good as yours does.
My big problem with photos at the moment is that my computer crashed recently and I lost the program the came with the camera.  Over the years I seem to mislaid the original disc that came with the camera. I have tried downloading the driver from the Canon website but to date cannot get anything to work. I am getting photos out of the camera via a very roundabout way at the moment.
All the best and look forward to receiving the wax in January.
All the best and regards
David

I've never actually used the camera software, I bought a card reader from a computer fair (but you can always get them on ebay) it is much faster and saves using the cameras battery/external power supply, the one I got takes five types of card plus 'sticks' and USB devices...but you could get a simple one that fits only your cameras card and connects (to the computer) by a spare USB port... :)

The one I'm using is like this - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/White-Ivory-Internal-3-5-13-In-1-Card-Reader-With-USB_W0QQitemZ8719496701QQcategoryZ167QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem - but mine has sockets for sound in/out too, and it's black to match my PC. It's fitted into the front panel and, if you can find out how to connect to an internal USB on the mainboard it's not hard to instal one.
I also have an older one like this - http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/USB-2-0-SD-MMC-SINGLE-CARD-READER-WRITER_W0QQitemZ5828121547QQcategoryZ51082QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem - on my old computer, with this style, ensure it takes your type of card (eg. this one is for MMC cards ONLY, mine is 'compactflash') it just plugs into a spare USB socket either directly or with the extension lead provided.

...now I'll shut up about computer accessories and let the thread get back on topic
