Hello everybody

My username may be a bit of a giveaway, but I grew up close to the Clyde and have memories of the Clyde steamers dating back to the 1950's.  Since then my shipping interest has grown to include most kinds of passenger vessel (preferably steam) from paddle steamers through coastal and cross channel ships, liners, cruise ships and right down to car ferries. Waverley will always be top of the list, due to her varied program of sailings and the fact that she sails in the open sea (which can be exciting!) but I can also thoroughly recommend the Swiss Lake boats as well.

I am not. however, a modeller (sorry).  Modellers enjoy skills that I lack, such as dexterity, patience, time and good eyesight, so here I can only marvel at the skills of others. WHile I am no expert, I am reasonably well read and may be able to offer information or references concerning the prototype.

Would the group be interested in the book list I am compiling. It started off as a check list of some books I need to complete my collection of reference books and "just grew". It now contains several hundred books covering all my shipping interests worldwide.  It is not complete (and probably never will be) - probably half the books listed are primarily or partially devoted to paddle steamers

A small sample:

Bernard Cox.      Paddle steamers.   1979

         Pleasure steamers   1983

         Paddling across the bay.    1981

G W Cox         Ships in Tasmanian waters.        1971

W Bartlett Cram      Picture history of New England
                                                passenger vessels.   1980

The aim is to provide enough information so I can go to a book search (I use abebooks), key in the author name and partial title & get a full list of those on offer - from 1 to 50 or more.  The date is publicaton date. Usually, at least one of the dealers will provide a description of the content, and price ranges can be frightening - from stupidly cheap to ludicrously expensive.

If there is interest, and someone can tell me how to do it, I will let you have the current copy shortly. and an updated version later. Be warned, though. My "must have" list has grown from 20 to 80 books, so it could be expensive reading!

I hope my offer is of interest.

Regards

David

Hello David,

Welcome to Paddleducks, nice to have you with us.... None-modellers are more than welcome to take part in the group, an interest in paddlers is all that's required! :-)  Whilst modelling is our primary activity, in order to model a particular prototype research is often required. So anyone who can help in that area will always be useful to our members.

Our website used to be hosted by Yahoo, where we had a message forum for over three years. During that time we compiled a large database of books owned, and recommended, by our users. So your list would be a VERY welcome addition!  At the moment I'm still looking for a way to display these things properly, so I don't know how long it will be until that is sorted - But you can certainly send me a copy of your booklist and I'll get it added to our own so it's there when we find a solution to the display problem.

Please send it to admin@paddleducks.co.uk

I hope you enjoy your stay with us....

Regards
Eddy
