Hello, everyone,
My name is Lennart Elg, from a suburb on the Baltic coast north of Stockholm. I am foremost a model railroader, with an interest in the logging railroads of the Pacific Northwest.
However, my model plans focus on an isolated logging camp on the bank of an unnamed river, and accessible only by boat. Provisions for the loggers arrive by boat, and logs are tied into rafts which are towed down river to a sawmill. Many such operations started by logging trees which could be reached from the shore. When these were exhausted they either moved camp to another location, or built a primitive railroad to reach farther – this is the premise of my model railroad plans.
As I have started to learn more about the utilitarian little sternwheelers which would have served my loggers (a far cry from the ornate floating palaces of the Mississippi) I have become increasingly interested in the marine aspects of these operations. A contributing factor might be that we spent 35 years of weekends and summer holidays on our sailboats.
