Boiler for A. J. Goddard
« on: March 22, 2013, 10:18:47 PM »
Hi,

The boiler built for the paddle engine made for AJG was a little large so it was decided to try making a smaller one to do this job.  A centre flue using a gas poker burner was considered but it would have a small water capacity so wouldn't run very long so it was decided to try another pot boiler but with increased heating area.  The boiler on AJG was a small water tube which was very low this meant that even an over scale boiler with water tubes fitted would be too high so it was decided to use hedgehog spikes and a long steam heater/super heater instead.  The boiler was constructed around a former in the same way as a boiler previously described in another thread.  The photgraphs start with the spikes fitted.

The in-line connector serves as a steam dome and a fixing for a removable chimney.

Steam pipe from dome.

More to come.

Regards Tony.

Hello again,

I have been away for a bit.

Some more photographs of the boiler construction.  Making the base for the boiler supports and the flame guard.

Hi,

Photograph of new boiler and previous one described in PD.

Sterno tray.

Lit.

Set Up.

Video.

The boiler would only run the engine for about a minute.  So a larger burner tray was made and fitted.

With flame guard and larger burner tray fitted the engine ran for 15minutes until Sterno burnt out. Video.

Removed from water to reduce mess. Video.

This is the boiler which will be fitted to a hull of A.J.Goddard which is being made.

Regards Tony.
