Maid of Sker (Qld, Australia)
« on: April 18, 2013, 08:53:58 AM »
From the yahoo groups qrig & LRRSA:
PS Maid of Sker was one of the ships that carried processed sugar from Benowa to Brisbane for Nerang Central Sugar Mill. Also served sugar mills along the other south-coast
rivers.

Hunting heritage histories: Gold Coast heritage sites explored: Similar South Coast histories www.abc.net.au/local/stories/2013/01/18/3672201.htm

There are also two references in the APAM threads.

We are starting a project for the Gold Coast City Council restoring  an 1800's paddle steamer the "Maid of Sker" this 80' vessel used to  run from Brisbane down to Southport and Nerang and all points in  between, we are going to shift her to a better site in the park and  restore her. Unfortunately there is not enough money to put her back  on the river,(any one got a spare million).
Cheers.

A few years back, just after the most recent restoration, I went and had a look and took some pics for the forum (they didn't come out well, which is why I never posted them).  Sadly, when they moved the boat they cut off the bottom of the full. There is nothing below the waterline mark (which rests on the ground). This means it can never be restored to operational conditions & they've destroyed a lot of the remaining original material.
