Advice/help needed
« on: January 11, 2010, 12:10:34 AM »
Hi guys,

I have a brushless motor that was fitted with an epicyclic gearbox - I've removed the gearbox so I can use the motor direct drive, but it has a pinion fitted that has been loctited in place.

How can I remove the pinion without damaging the motor or it's shaft?

Any help/advice would be greatly appreciated!

Regards
Eddy

What you really need is a gear puller. A simple ring with a slot in the rim, opposite this is a screw with a pin end which pushes the shaft out of the gear when tightened - maybe your engineering mates have one.
One thing you could try is to get a pair of pliers which have a sidecutter blade (you know the wire cutting bit behind the jaws). Position the motor shaft between these blades with the pinion resting on them. Support the pliers over the jaws of an open vice so that the motor is hanging between the jaws with the pinion resting on the blades. Place a loop of wire around the end of the plier jaws to stop them springing open. Then take a punch or drift the extreme end of which is smaller than the motor shaft. Place the drift on the end of the motor shaft and with a light hammer you should be able to drive the motor shaft off the pinion. Hope this is clear!

If the pinion is Loctited on the use of heat might loosen it.
If you don't intend to use the gearbox again you could use a dremel or file to remove the pinion. Regards,

Hi Eddy. Contact Chris and see if he has a small NUT SPLITTER. These work just as well on gears as nuts and they dont put any strain on the motor or shaft. Regards, Walter.
Blessed are the "cracked" -for they let in the light for the rest of us.
