Modified Graupner Paddlewheels

Here's a couple of photos of the Graupner paddlewheels I've modified for my model of the PS Waverley. They have had the outside ring removed and the paddle floats have been reduced in size. With these mods they now fit inside the scale paddleboxes on my 1:53 scale hull.

Hello Eddy, a neewbie question for you. I assume that these are feathering paddles? If so how is the  action created. I would assume a n eccentric centre ring mounted off centre by a fraction would be e
nough to create thelifting action required.

You absolutely correct Jim - The main part of the wheel (the black part in the photos) rotates on the drive shaft. The red parts of the wheel are the blades and feathering mechanism - The outer part is offset about 0.25" from the main drive shaft, so as the wheel rotates the paddles feather....

Difficult to actually describe in text, so I hope you understand that? :-)

The Paddles on the Lory J. on this site are Graupner Feathering Paddles, I have run them with no problem. One thought the pivot pins should be glued in. In a manner not to bind the floats up yet keeping them from falling out

I've seen the plastic pins on the Graupner paddles replaced with brass nuts and bolts - A bit of studlock keeps everything in place.... The bolts also look so much more realistic!

Having just started my Glasgow, I was pondering about those pins in the paddlewheel and your comment about replacing the plastic ones with brass ones set me thinking. Where did you source the right size brass nuts and bolts.
Also, and this request goes out to anybosy who's built a Glasgow, any pics (completed or during construction) would be great and any hints and tips about things that could go wrong with the build would be greatly appreciated.
Rumaging through the box of bits, I see the decking is a sheet of thin wood with planks printed on it. How good does this look when finished or is it practical to replace with proper planking?

What outside diameter did you end up with on the modded wheels?
Wondering if they could be reduced enough to fit my 1/48 Talisman.

With the outer ring removed, the wheels are exactly 5" in diameter.... That could be made slightly less if you reduced the depth of the floats slightly, but the minimum would be around 4.75"
