two more articles in downloads
« on: October 24, 2007, 08:29:17 PM »
Eddy has just placed a couple of articles in the downloads/articles section. One is about my steam launch Cyril - just general chat about the boat and how and why I made the steam plant the way it is.
The other is a bit different in that it is really a diary about building and testing a Picket boat for a 24 hour scale sail that took place in 1987 (was it really 20 years ago?). I fancy that a lot of the content may not mean much to many people as it was written up for my information. When I mentioned this to John Cundell, he asked to see what I had done, and was keen to publish it as it was. See what you think.
Links to the articles are
http://www.paddleducks.co.uk/forum/dlman.php?func=file_info&file_id=768 for Cyril and  http://www.paddleducks.co.uk/forum/dlman.php?func=file_info&file_id=769 for the Picket boat.

Hi Malcolm,

Saw your post about two new downloads but when I tried them they both give an error message.

I am a comparitive newcomer although I am rated as a 'full member'. I would very much like to read your articles if possible but this reply has a warning at the top saying it is 120 days since it was last posted. Is there a way to get to see them or am I too late now.

Perhaps I need to spaek to Mr Admin!?

All the best, Fred Graham

I remmember reading the 24 hour steam article when it was first published, It doesn't feel like it was 20 years.

Gerald.

Hi Eddy,

I have read the articles by Malcolm Beak and wondered in the case of the 'CYRIL' what is the significance of the two small squares which is printed alongside dimensions.

For example relating to the engine I have  ...... with Bore and stroke equal at ( small Box)" there would be...... There are many such occurances in this article where a 'small box' seems to be sustituted for another dimension. I imagine, perhaps, it is to do with the application compatibilty which substitutes a character for one which is not recognised. I am using MS Word to read it and I have saved it to open it from a directory of my own and opened it directly from Paddleducks but they both display this 'small box'.

Any solutions or is the small box supposed to be there?  Incidentally, once again, these are very enjoyable articles and a credit to Malcolm.

All the best, Fred Graham

Hi Fred, it is a long time since I last looked at these articles but have had a lok again. The small box I can only imagine is the " as inwhole or  fractions of an inch for imperial sizes but it displays OK for me,, Are there any others who this affects? I have checked using both Word '97 and Word 2003 versions.

cheers

Jim

Malcolm, looking at the articles, Cyril in particular, causes me huge problems, I now feel totally inadequate as I will never manage to build to this standard. Lovely job. Fred - I downloaded and saved the articles in My Documents, they open with Word and I do not have the boxes. Cheers, Ian.

Hi Folks,

Had another go with the 'CYRIL' article and have managed to get it without the 'boxes'.
Bill Gates can be a problem sometimes especially for geriatrics.

I have been an IBM Lotus user for many years now Lotus Millenium. It was always user friendly and no bloody paperclips telling you what to do!

Thanks to all, All the best, Fred Graham

Hi Guys
Thanks for all your kind comments. In reality, the photos make things look much better than they really are. I'm afraid I just like to get things working then find plenty more to do rather than make the bits and pieces look beautiful (like Bogstandard for example). At the moment, steam is taking a bit of a back seat as I'm into IC engines. This weekend I was at Thornbury for the Bristol Society's show. Lots of boats there including a rather nice model of Sir Walter Scott with a twin cylinder steem engine - the prototype runs on Loch Katerine just north of Glasgow. Sory no pictures as I forgot my camera.
I don't know about feeling inadequate Ian, but next to my Seal 15 was a wonderful 1/3 exact scale model of a 3 litre Bently Red Lable engine. It started on the button and sounded like the real thing. My Seal starts on the button OK, but the carburation isn't too good and it spits loads of oil out of the exhaust. Looke very second best next to the Bentley.
Malcolm
