Irrawaddy-type Sternwheeler in Sweden?
« on: March 27, 2008, 09:44:08 AM »
Hi folks,

When I recently opened the site, one of the rotating title pictures caught my eye:

It shows the steamer "Indalen" on the Glimån river in Västernorrland, Sweden.
But without the caption, I would have looked like a typical Irrawaddy steamer to me, especially almost like a sibling of the well-known "Zulu".

Any idea how this comes?
I mean, the climate is somehow different in Burma and the North of Sweden....  ???

All I could found so far is the site http://www.skola.sundsvall.se/hembygd/battraf.htm with some more small pictures.

Moritz, puzzled

Hello,

when I fist saw the picture, I was also astonished about the similarity with paddlesteamers on African or Asian rivers.
May be, it is possible, to get some drawings or plans when connect the server of the site?

A more European example of sternwheeler is found on the german site about "Dampfer Elsa" on river Fulda in Hessen.
The stern wheel was driven by chains through steamengine until the beginning 60s, with diesel engine until mid 70s!

regards

Thomas
