plank thickness/width of murry paddlers
« on: February 18, 2007, 11:11:36 AM »
Hi all,
for the life of me i can't find my note's on the average thickness of the red gum planks used in our Aussie paddlers.
I have a figure of 200mm in my head, but I suspect this is more so for thickness and not width i can't find any information to verify this...

so I am chasing a width figure more so to help scale some pictures i have.

any help would be appreciated :D

cheers Anthony

Hi PD's - Anthony

from Ships of the Inland Rivers....[Parsons]
PS Mayflower..we gave her a new red gum hull of 2 3/4"planks... [I believe width as the Mayflower is a small hull]

PS Oscar W... and planking red gum  2  3/4"X 3" .... [3" a misprint? - our Red Gum is similar to Iron Bark & steaming a 3" thick width would be difficult]

from River Boat Days.... [Phillips]
no listed dimensions, but good snaps to guess the hull plank sizing compared to adult persons [face = approx 8" high] on in close proximity to the hull
PS Eric....8" hull planks?
PS Adelaide.... 4" hull planks?
PS Enterprise....8" hull plan?ks
PS Emma....6" hull planks?
PS Invincible....5" hull planks?
PS Tyro....4" hull planks

I also have a few unreferenced photo copies of old lithographs of hulls being  :crash [planked]  & the general hull plank thickness appears to be in the order of  1 1/2" thick - Derek

I also found my notes  :D  which may be of some help to other's wishing to try and scale drawings.
redgum construction of medium size paddle vessels
stem and stern posts         305mm x 609mm upto 7 feet in length
Bottom frames  152mm x 152mm
planks  228mm x 76 mm
side planking  152mm x 76mm
side plate  1/8 inch or 3mm

cheers Anthony

PD's & as Anthony quotes...

"planks 228mm x 76 mm, side planking 152mm x 76mm"

:thinking .. back in Y2000, I did calculate the thickness of hull planks for Decoy & ended up at a rounded 1/8"

So a 76mm plank = 3" thick and @ 1:25 scale = 0.12", which again is pretty close @ my 0.125"

I had trouble steaming my 1/8" cedar & breakage  :crash , so imagine how our fore fathers coped with 3" thick bloody red gum......maybe just a little    :respect2 & a few  :beer - Derek
