Clockwork motors

Hi there.
Does anyone have any experience of clock work drives for a paddler?
I imagine putting a long key down the funnel to give it a wind .
I was thinking along the lines of an old gramphone mechanism. With any luck it should give it quite a long run. The mechanism has a speed control to suit the old records turning at 78 RPM which is getting close to the required RPM for a paddler. A little experiment with pulley sizes should get it spot on to suit the paddler concerned.
No astern option of course without some cunning clutch device!! Need the lake to oneself!!
Any ideas?
All the best
David
