Hi all paddlers - can any one help with details of the process for chemically blackening brass

Many years ago I spent (one thousand five hundred & four days) working in weapons systems at
HMA Garden Island Naval Dockyard (Sydney - Australia) - I remember repairs to ships brass signal
lamps often included new brass external fittings or fasteners which were chemically treated to provide
a dull/flat black surface which was certainly scratch resistant - regards Derek

Derek,

There is a hobby supplier in the States called Micro
Mark. They have a product called Blacken-it. It will
do everything except stainless steel.
