Title: Great Western 1867 railcar ferry
Post by: Paulrjordan on June 15, 2005, 02:54:44 AM
Hey Randy:

Sorry it took me two days to reply to your email..but I've been
beating the jungle drums over your Detroit River Railcar Ferries.

Now First thing....I'm sending you the EBAY number for a LOVELY port
side view 4" x 6" photo of "Great Western". This thing closes in a
couple of days so you might consider a bid...it's not expensive!
I have contacted the seller who is a Great lakes ship authority and
might have some further material. I'll also send you his email.

I have contacted my buddy in Ontario (one of the foremost authorities
on Canadian Railways) and he recommends the following book for
additional information on "Great Western" (1867)

RAILWAY STEAMSHIPS OF ONTARIO by Dana Ashdown, Pub 1988 ISBN
0-9197883-80-5.

Around US$29.00: currently a copy available from:
Bookin USA, Kenmore, WA, U.S.A.
books@bookin.net
Amazon and a number of other NEW book sellers have it listed at
US$26.00 but you may have to wait anything from 3- 5 weeks for stock.

There are 3 pages of reference and a picture of your paddler.

There's another book on the subject but I have no idea if there are
references to your paddlers in it.

"The Great Lakes Car Ferries" by George W. Hilton.

There are a couple of photos on a Website you might want to contact
the owner of: mleon@aol.com (trackdog)
http://members.aol.com/carferry/Carferry.htm
with a postcard of GW at:
http://members.aol.com/carferry/gwes.jpg
and very dark pic of Lansdowne at:
http://members.aol.com/carferry/landsdowne.jpg
(I'll try cleaning this image up a bit!)

It seems that there may well be plans of these Detroit Rail Car
Ferries at the Bowlingreen University, and they are certainly worth
contacting:

http://www.bgsu.edu/colleges/library/hcgl/vessel.html

I'll contact the Railroad Newsgroups and see if any one knows of plans
for "GW" and "Lansdowne"

GREAT!
Thanks. I will check out these things asap.
Great Western is my first choice to find but will certainly settle for
either of the other two.

Just posted a couple of small images of the mighty Detroit River Grand
Trunk rail car ferries, "Great Western" (1867) and "Lansdowne".

Randy mentioned something about SMOKE...just check out the image of
"Lansdowne"!! I guess smoke density inspection (and demerits) didn't
apply to Railway ships...only locomotives!
