What's the most reliable way to minimise leakage around paddle shafts?
Many years ago I used to use a patch of oil soaked leather which worked very well but tree huggers seem to go apoplectic at the very mention of oil these days.
That said, that was for shafts that weren't immersed in water. My latest project calls for 6 shafts that will be fully immersed all the time.
Anyone got any ideas?

You can get sealed bearings if they are available in the correct size for your shafts?

I must admit, I never thought of actual bearings ::)
Found some now that should do the job fine and only £1.54 each. Result :)

This is a Grade 316 S/S shell + ZZ shields bearing to suit a 1/4" shaft........[smaller sizes are available]
Bearings would be available from any bearing distributor, alternatively available complete in the miniature Plummer Block from SPD/SI in America [or SPD/SI distributors World wide]
ZZ stainless shaft bearings are not listed as waterproof, however delete the ZZ designation & substitute 2RS for a synthetic seal which is listed as hose down proof [for the food industry]
I understand our applications [shaft above water level, but splashed on], generally would not see a lot of water in their life time, however as shiny & cheap carbon steel bearings maybe, I would be hesitant in using them in conjunction with water
Keep us posted on a 3 shaft Paddler?

I would stow your concerns regarding the approbation of those arborial clasping bigots! Any reaction you provoke in them is indeed a pink sea fish!
Any one these days would use a vegetable oil by definition so their false arguments are irrelevant.
What about a nice drop of Italy's finest?
Or are there surrogate flesh eaters out there that wish to preserve turnips?!
