Title: Hello from another new member from Australia
Post by: Agrow on June 22, 2020, 09:47:20 PM

Hello and thank you for letting me join.
I'm a steam engine enthusiast from Victoria, Australia.  I have made several model steam engines (stationary "industrial style").  I recently purchased a copy of Stan Bray's "Model Marine Steam" with a view of looking at building model marine steam engines/plants with the possibility of building one into a boat one day (if it proved reliable).  Noting that the drawings in the book contained several omissions/errors a quick google search lead me to this forum.

I know very about modelling boats but look forward to learning from this site

Thanks again

Tony

Welcome to the forum!

Model steam boats are a beautiful hobby and will keep you busy for a long time :-)
Why don't you show some of your steam engines?

Welcome Tony.

Where in Victoria are you?

I'm in Wendouree, Ballarat.

Damien,

I am out the other side of Ballarat, in Canadian.

Kno3,
Below are some photos of some of my models (hopefully there is, I wasn't too sure on how to add photos to a post).

Most are simple barstock from plans (e.g. Elmer Verburg Designs) or casting/material kits.  I usually take a few to exhibit at the Echuca Steam Rally on the Queens Birthday weekend each year (unfortunately not this year for obvious reasons).

My biggest hurdle is usually finding "hobby time" between long work hours and other life activities (and I also have a full size Aveling & Porter Traction Engine).

Nice work! You blue PMR engine looks very elegant. And the little Bengs engine looks ideal to power a paddler, perhaps in a twin configuration which should be easy enough to make.

There is actually a build article on the Bengs website showing how to combine two kits into a neat twin cylinder horizontal

https://www.bengs-modellbau.de/magazin/bauberichte/dampfmaschine-danni-2-zylinder-maschine/ (https://www.bengs-modellbau.de/magazin/bauberichte/dampfmaschine-danni-2-zylinder-maschine/)

The "standard" version I built runs extremely well, you can spin it over quite quickly by blowing into the steam inlet.  Being piston valve, it also reverses by just swapping the inlet/exhaust connections

Perfect little engine,  thanks for the link!
It also looks like it has piston valves, so a rotary reversing valve could also be easily made.
