Can anyone please explain to me how to achieve individual paddle and rudder steering and what mixers are required PLEASE?

I've never used Action gear but they seem to be highly rated on Mayhem.
The article refers to props but paddle wheels should be the same.

Thanks Barry that puts some light on the subject. :beer

Also remember that if using the P40 Action mixer you will need TWO speed controllers, one for each motor. Or you could use the P94 which is a combined unit featuring twin speed controllers and mixer in one package.
I've used the Action devices myself in many models and they work pretty well - The only downside I've ever found (and it isn't a fault with the Action units, it's a problem with the motors), is that electric motors rarely (if ever) run at the same speed in reverse as they do when going forward, so the mixing can never be perfect.

Eddy

Thanks Eddy I'll have a look at the plan and see If I have room to twist the LHS drive belt 180deg or even 90 deg so the motors both run the same way.

I emailed Action No reply as yet assume they're closed for the festive season.

Hi Damien
Action has a unit that has 2 esc the unit is 94 and will power 2 motors I use this model on my paddle steamer and on a 2 prop tug.

Mtroniks do a rather nifty mixer, if you have 2 motors + rudder, take a look at the 'w' mixer, pretty cheap too.

After further thought on this I'll set it up for rudder only no point in spending more mega dollars on a boat that will only get it's bum wet in a test float situation.

After a ride to Lake Wendouree I've decided there's no point building and not sailing though it was blowing 40kph-ish and quite choppy there will be better days so I spent my Chrissy money on a P94 after reading the instructions a few more time and also a P56 STEAM ENGINE SIMULATOR.
The reed bird sanctuary mid lake has grown about 1/3 in size in the year or so since I was there last sad really that the only lake weed that gets mowed is on the rich folks rowing course.
They need a paddle vacuum boat to do circuits around the down wind side of lake once a month the week after the paddle mower.

I finally got an email reply from component shop.
The P94 will allow for independent control of each paddle wheel whilst still providing rudder control.
From that I assume I just wasted 97 pound or $167au from their online paper work I believed rudder & individual paddles would be mixed I'm seriously hoping the reply came from non modelling office worker.

Read about it here. Pages 1, 3 and 8 in particular.

Thanks barry I had download and already read that info.
It was this email that thru me into a dither of doubt, and seems to indicate rudder control is separate.
Hi Damien,
The P94 will allow for independent control of each paddle wheel whilst still providing rudder control.

Not really clear what they mean. I'm guessing they mean using mode 1. That would appear to allow you to use a separate channel on the transmitter for each speed control leaving the rudder independent. Shown in fig 7 tank steering.
Modes 3 and 4 shown in fig 9 use the rudder output to control motor direction.
Another option used by a member of our club is to plug the steering or S connector on the diagram into channel 4. This allows him to rudder as normal but when he wants mixing to use channel 4.
You could ask on Model Boat Mayhem as I believe to original designer of action stuff is on there and might be able to help you more.

Not a member of Mayhem was banned when the bloke connected to model boats mag didn't like something I said 8 or more years ago & never been there since.

Hi Damien
With the 94 unit both paddles are running together until you want to turn with the rudder and then one paddle slows down or stops the other paddle keeps going to help turn the boat when you stop the rudder both paddles work together again .
I hope this will help.

Many thanks Rick that relieves my mind greatly, that's what thought from reading the online notes bu8t the email from component shop was very confusing. :bravo :bravo :bravo

:) Hello;
Another technique is to use the "V. tail" functions of radio transmitters. That for V-shaped rear tail planes

Thanks :beer :beer

Hi,
in my quarterwheeler Lulonga model I am using two independent geared motors, with two Esc of course, steering and speed with one stick.
In transmitter I have simple V-tail mixer , mix canal 1 (Ailerons) and 3 (throttle) , steering with right stick, as i wrote in my article here. Very simple...
