Title: HMS Volcano Wheels Information please.
Post by: DamienG on November 15, 2016, 11:29:15 PM
Can anyone tell me the width and diameter of Volcano's wheels and whether the are commercially available if so who stocks them with the silly season approaching I'll be asked what I'd like for Christmas Mark's model bits has the hull & plans and some fittings thinking on erupting into this project when Josie is done.

Thanks in advance Damien.

   Hi Damien.

Marks Drawings has dia. to outside ring  125mm. across paddle frame 30mm.
  With the 8 float paddles 22mm x 57mm.
I am not sure of actual size as I have not found any real drawings.
As in my build I made my own. Which do look reasonable for size against the photo's of the ship.
There is about 5 sister tugs one being my Dromedary. All with slight differences.
Marks hull is very good but you may need to make a few changes.
  I hope this helps.

  Mike.

Measuring from the Admiralty 1/48 builder's drawings the wheels are 122mm in diameter and the rims are spaced 28mm apart. They are nine-float wheels and the floats measure 57mm x 21mm. The sizes may vary slightly from drawing to drawing as a result of errors in copying and the possible instability of the originals.

I don't believe that there are any wheels commercially available. I did some sketches for my wife who then did CAD drawings for the wheels, eccentrics and arms, float mounts, rivet detail and other detailing parts for the rest of the vessel and we had them photo-etched by a manufacturer who is happy to do one-off's for model-makers.

I don't believe that there are any wheels commercially available.

This is the second time the question has been asked recently, so perhaps i should say something.
Yes, Feathering wheels are available ... (and No M3 Fastenings, as presumed in another post.)

Kim said he'll be adding lots to his web site in the new year for Volcano/volatile think I'll buy all I can for for this closest to full scale build I've attempted also most likely the most expensive eagerly waiting to see whats on offer.
