Title: Paddler plans by XLIST
Post by: Paulrjordan on June 14, 2005, 05:34:46 PM
You've heard David (Allinson) refer to a book he obtained called
"British Steam Tugs" by P.N. Thomas. Well, it seems Mr. Thomas may
also be responsible for some paddler plans which I have found at the
Xlistplans website.

These plans seem to be reasonably priced but are probably lacking in
construction detail. However, they may prove useful for those looking
for additional reference for the following Classic paddle steamers:

MM 528 "PS Duchess of Fife" An accurate scale 54in paddle steamer for
either metal or timber hull construction, and suitable for radio
control. All details for articulated paddles. Electric drive.
Beam 13in. *** Price £8.50

MM 1154 "PS Duchess of Kent" By P N Thomas. A handsome paddle steamer
built in 1887. Drawing shows sheet and plan at 1:48 scale, length 50
3/4in, displacement about 10lbs. Body plan included, but no
constructional details. **** Price £5.00

MM 1165 "PS Albion" By P N Thomas. A handsome paddle steamer built in
1893 and a well-known vessel in the Bristol Channel in the early part
of this century. Scale of 1:48, gives 51.5in length, 6.25in beam, 8lbs
displacement at scale draught. No constructional details. ****
Price £8.50

MM 1143 Thames Penny Steamer By P N Thomas. A passenger paddle steamer
built in 1885 which is an unusual and interesting subject. Drawn to
1:32 scale, length 38in, beam 5.25in, displacement 3.75lbs. No model
construction shown. **** Price £6.50

This so called "Thames Penny steamer" sounds rather interesting..can
any of our UK experts shed some light on this type of ship and maybe
provide some names or photos? 1:32 scale at 38" makes her a very
compact little paddler at just over 100 feet.

These plans can be accessed at:

The Thames Penny Steamers ran what would now be called a commuter service
along the River Thames in central London. The fare was one penny, hence the
name. I imagine the spread of urban tramway systems was the end for them,
although they are little documented.
