Title: hello from Canada
Post by: Dmon on September 13, 2015, 12:30:58 AM
I just joined, am an avid RC model boater, tanker, trucker. I have completed my first paddlewheel, a sternwheeler loosely based on the Creole Queen but made to be more late 1800-early 1900's. She is all wood construction (mostly 1/8" Baltic birch), with the paddlewheel and some detail pieces from styrene or resin castings. The power  is electric, belt drive with dummy piston drive. She has sunk once, and I learned from my mistakes and now I can run for two hours at a time without a drop going inside the hull. She has smoke (burning baby oil system) which I purchased, but I now build my own smoke units as well. She is my favorite, and has the honor of carrying my wife's name, the Lady Jane.

The Lady Jane is 48" long, plus gangplank- for you model railroaders she is O scale and this made for easy addition of figures and trim pieces. Her hull is 3" deep with a 10" wide deck. Her power comes from a 12v 7Ah SLA battery, and her electric motor is a gear stepdown one with a speed of 150rpm at 12v. The drive is a 1:1 ratio, and works very well. She is equipped with 'steam for the dual stacks, and I even piped it thru the wood stove chimney for the pilot house. When the rudders turn, the ship's wheel spins as well. I have equipped her with a bunch of flickering orange LED's to mimic the oil lamps they used for light in those days.

Future plans include building a pusher tug sternwheeler - it just seems to be logical. The paddlewheel system is far superior to a propeller drive especially with the weedy pond my model boat club calls home.

Thanks. I am in Winnipeg, pretty much in the centre of Canada. I belong to the Winnipeg Model Boat Club, have been doing this for 2 years now, and worked on this boat for about 1 1/2 of those years (on and off).
