Hi Gerald,
I've made the article from Industries a bit more readable, and perhaps Gerhard can translate the German text from VDI Z. I'll look some more, but can you say what exactly you would be interested in?

Hi Dave
Most interesting would be the lines- and the frames plan, the power plant ist shown good enough for me, but maybe there is mor info about it too. This could be what I call a "beneath" project :whistle, I`d like to build her!
Project folder is just set on my PC ;D

Gerhard

Hi Gerhard,
I have just checked the National archives of Scotland and there is no plan for the Mana listed. Not much actually for  Fleming and Ferguson  (Paisley) either so it may be in one of the other English archives or the NMM (expensive if I understand correctly) where there was 1 match but no visible information which means they haven't scanned whatever it is they have. The Tyne & Wear archives and maybe just basing a lines plan on an existing tug of the same period.  Maybe in Thomas' British Steam Tugs  which includes plans that might help.
I have now checked the sources at my disposal and nothing more than what is here is available.

When it comes to finding ship plans the phrase "So close and yet so far" springs to mind.

So I will have to draw a complete new plan for her, will be a lot of work to do. The hull seems to be close to the Eppleton Hall or the Strongbow, so I will try to do it. When I`m finished, the plan will be set at the download section herein.

The shot of the engine looks intreaging and I had been wondering if there were any shots of the valve gear and the controls.
Regards,
Gerald.

Hello Gerald,
The article seemed to indicate that they would cover the engines in more detail in a later issue and so I checked for 2 years and found nothing. either they forgot about it or couldn't get more info. There is nothing in engineering or The Engineer for those years, and nothing in Marine engineering and naval architecture either. Usually someone picks up on ships and engines but sorry, no luck on this one.

if you can access this website there are about 50 books dealing with valve gears , most illustrated, that might help. I even checked some engineering indexes and nothing particular on F&F steam engines though many ships seemed to have used them--they built both ships and engines.

Thanks Dave,
I have always found the valve gear on steam engines fascinating.

Gerald.

New Zealand paddle Tug "Mana" and Titan.

These two tugs were build for the Timaru Harbour Board where I live.

I have the drawing for the paddle Tug "Titan" built in 1880 and sailed to new Zealand from Scotland.

Thank you for this information.
