Title: Can anybody please identify this model?
Post by: NoNuFink on November 24, 2013, 11:19:11 PM
Hi guys.  I'm new here so please make allowances for any errors.

It must be 50 years since I last built a model boat (one of the Aerokits range) so obviously well out of date with modern ways of doing things.  However I have been building and flying r/c model aircraft in that time so not new to model building or r/c.

I have a problem that my eyesight is failing and I fear that flying will have to become a thing of the past. (I can still drive but only just - DVLA informed).   So I'm contemplating building a boat/ship.  I have always fancied the Great Western by Brunel.  However there appear to be no plans available (I did once ask the Greenwich museum) so it would have to be scratch built.  Rather than dive in on a process that I know very little about, I'm thinking about a kit or plan for a similar style of paddler (electric powered) so that I can get some experience.

One day while lurking on this forum, one of the random pictures flashed up a model that I very much like the look of.  Can anybody please give me any info - I hope the picture is attached below.

Many thanks in advance for any help.

That was a steam powered model that came along to our Paddler Day in 2007, unfortunately I cannot give any more details on it, but you will find quite a few images here: http://www.paddleducks.co.uk/smf/index.php?action=gallery;cat=9;sortby=date;orderby=desc;start=80

There are 6 pages in that gallery, so please browse through all the pages to get all the images....

Eddy

Eddy,
Thanks for the pointers (and the pics).  It's a shame there's no more info.  A plan or better still a kit would have been a great help.  Whoever built it doesn't seem to have put a name on it either. :-\

Cheers

Sorry Bernie but it doesn't look anything like it to me.  (Unless I'm missing something of course).   :-\

It looks a little like the Krick paddler "Gulnara" but thats a static model.  It's certainly looks pre American Civil War say 1850's ish!

Hello Eddy. I am afraid that this model is entirely freelance. The builder built it around the steam plant and based it in vatious pictures and his own imagination! A model full of character though- It only ever appeered once and I seem tro remember it caught fire! Regards, walter

@TailUK
Hi,
I wrote a reply to your message a week ago but it seems to have gone missing.
I like the Gulnara but it is a static model and from what I've seen it would be not at all easy to convert to a working model.  I need something to get sailing & building experience (i.e. something that is known to work well) before trying anything quite that technical including a scratch build.

@Walter Snowdon.
Many thanks for the information.  It's a shame that it's not something that I can plagiarize. - As you said - full of character.   At least I can stop looking now.
