Title: Graupner Paddle Wheel Sets
Post by: Broder Incertus on November 09, 2013, 05:08:48 AM
Greetings,

The paddle wheel set (and Glasgow) seems to have disappeared from Graupner's site: does anyone know whether Graupner has discontinued all things paddler?

Are there any commercially available alternatives out there, or is DIY the only options (apart from de-paddling an old model)? (The Clyde Model Boats shop is as far as I can tell reduced to an dead-end error message.)

Hi, I thought that Graupner had stopped trading and called in the receivers. Does any one now anything about this. I think that I saw an article on it several months ago.

Not entirely promising news. I found this on their site: "Graupner’s product range is large scaled and will now be limited to a competitive circumference, by offering individual and exclusive products." Paddle wheels might not fall inside the "competitive circumference".

So, what else is there, of a reasonable quality (and price), paddle-wheel-wise?

Hi the point is,

Graupner went bankrupt and were bought by a company from the far east they produce mainly RC gear.  At the moment there are only rumours going round about the future of Graupner. Theys have now started to emplojing new staff. But i don't know what is really going on sorry.

Regards Hans.

The HoTT guys, right?

The funny thing is that the paddle wheel set was listed up till a month or so ago (as expected to be available again in December ...); I stupidly assumed that the information on Graupner's site had some basis in reality.

On the other hand, Float a Boat's paddle wheels look rather nice: pity having to buy them from the other side of the globe.

Why not make your own? Not to difficult just takes time, only need a drill, small hammer, files, compass, & scriber (sharp nail). If you want to know how look at my Duke of Devonshire build.

I know my limitations (w.r.t. time, space, skills, tools, etc.): little time, kitchen table, ...

i think float a boat in australia still have some stock of au. made paddle wheel kits , HIPS, but i don't know if they have suitable sized ones .
if you intend to push aheads and make your own , its a lot of work , but you will get there , but ,you could get rims cut out by a laser cutter , and then bolt on the floats w J bolts , made out of 2 mm s/steel bolts , it does cost , but will speed up construction .
it is easier to make the p wheels non feathering , in model size , i don't think it matters much , to the models performance , but thats your decision ,
 good luck bill

They may not be what you require  they are  rimless wheel based on Waverley wheels that is 94 mm. dia. x 54 wide. I bought them off Barry from this site and had them posted from Australia. If yo look in the traders section there is a picture of them

the graupner paddle wheels are 140mm OD, outside of floats 125mm, floats 65mm wide +25 mm.
i don't see the need , in model size , for feather , full size , is another story
8 floats .
i would strongly recommend to talk to Barry , if there is enough demand , he will help ,after all ,he has invested money into this side of the hobby , just too help make available a product that isnt available .
if there is no demand , the project will fold up , from the other side of the hobby shop bench , there is a lot of work going into producing a quality product , and ongoing expenses to expand product lines .
my first set of paddle wheels took me 3 months to make out of brass , second set 4/5 hrs. from Barry`s  kit .
I intend to stock pile more of these paddle wheel kits , for future models , and would like to have a go at "tugs O.J" , one day
food for though

Hi Guys
Have you thought about having the paddle wheels made on a 3D printer?
I have just two paddles made they are 85mm. x 20mm and were made in one piece for my Great Eastern 1-200 scale working model.  At first a friend did make them on a 3Dprinter for free!  they were in sections, spoke, rings and blades that I had to glue together but the spokes would not line up so I had them remade commercially
cost $20.00 for the cad drawing $65.00 for the wheels here in Adelaide,
cheers,
Hutch.

hi hutch,

any photos of the paddle wheels to see how they look, and could they be made commercially by some one at a reasonable cost.
