I am considering building a R/C stern wheeler riverboat to operate in
my swimming pool and am soliciting recommendations. Prefer a kit
because I don't want the hassle of locating items for a scratch
built. The pool is about 32' x 16' so the model should be able to
turn and manuever reasonably within those limits. Harry B.

Hi Harry:
Glad to hear you're in a building mood again. After your success with
the Mini Mamoli sternwheeler, you'll have no problem building a bigger
operating one. Any kits I'm aware of our in our bookmarks section.

- STERNWHEELERS
As far as I can see there are four candidates for
sternwheeler kits you can order:
By far the one I see most on the water is the Dumas "CREOLE QUEEN"
which is a good looking kit except for the printed acetate fancy
railings which look fine from 5 feet away but close up...yukkk! I have
seen these replaced with polyurethane castings and they look much
better. However it's a good running model.
Length: 48" Beam: 10" Scale: 1/4"=1'.
Next largest is the Sternwheel Riverboat "MISSISSIPPI 1870"
(display/operating) kit by Mantua-Sergal. Have a feeling it's pretty
pricey this one. I've never seen one built but theres a good photo
link on the file.
Length 41 1/3" / Scale 1:50
I'm not sure if the "RIVER QUEEN" by Constructo is an operating kit,
but since it's plank of frame, there's no reason it shouldn't be.
Looks likes Naturecoast has them on sale at the moment. List $249.95
and on sale at $99.99 according to their webpage at
http://naturecoast.com/hobby/construct.htm#RIVER QUEEN
However like the next one it's quite small at 26-1/2" / Height 14" /
Scale 1:80 but might be ideal for a swimming pool.
Another smaller operating kit is the "KING of the MISSISSIPPI"
(display/operating) kit by Artesania Latina. We've seen some lovely
static examples of this model built by Paddleducks members
(check out the bookmarks section) and they should be able to advise
you if it lends itself to "motorizing".
Length 27" / Height 10" / Scale 1:50
As a final note, Harry..don't be afraid of scratch building from
plans. It's like having a kit minus the PARTS!!! However, building
all the details of a unique and authentic sternwheeler would be very
satisfying. Towboat Joe, John Fryant and others have some very good
plans.
Keep us posted so we can follow your progress.
