Title: Graupner "GLASGOW"

Hi all

I am about to start building the Graupner "GLASGOW" steam tug. I'm not a RC or model sailing person but love building model boats since retiring. Over the last two years I have built the Panart "BRUMA" and the "ANTEO" which I have sold
so I want to build something different hence the "GLASGOW". Unlike the two I have already build the kit has a pre-formed hull which I am wanting to clad with walnut strip and finish with satin varnish. Could anyone suggest what size strips should I use eg:- width and thickness, I was thinking 6mm width and 0.5 or 1mm thickness and also any suggestions on the strip length and placement say like a brickwall but longer. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi Gorden,
                The deck planking in full size will have been around 10 inches wide by about 1.5 inches thick. depending on the scale you can work out the size required from that. hope that helps.

I think Gordon means to plank the entire hull, rather than just the deck, Tug..... Maybe he can clarify that so we can give more help?

Hi PDs'....... & well Gordon...I must call a spade a spade   :a102

Attempting to wooden plank an ABS or plastic hull is a huge challenge :41

1. the bond between wood & synthetic hull material could be problematical
2. when sanding 0.5 mm thick planking to smooth or round out hull curvature may result in ZERO thickness of plank left  :ranting
3. the long term life of the same bond even worse  :crash
4. immersion in water would be a no no

as derek says, a great deal of wailing and knashing of teath ensues if you go down that road.....
You would be easier taking "stations"........... measurements of the hull at certain sections and making your own bulkhead frames and a plank on frame hull from the plastic hull in the kit.

I stand corrected. but as has been said your heading for a lot of problems if you try to clad the hull as has been said. I think you would be well advised to re-think this one Gorden. Tug

maybe you would like to download the "Strongbow" plans (free) to scratchbuild your hull and finish it off with the Glascow decking and superstructure.
all the paddles, paddleboxes are similar.
you might look at my photos to see the similarities
