Title: First sailing !!!!!
Post by: Lornadoone2 on March 11, 2012, 03:21:47 AM
Well the Racecourse class minesweeper Hms Atherstone (Lorna Doone2) took to the Oxford model boat lake today for the first time in 10yrs, having been extensively restored she had been built with a prop on her and this had been disconected which served to be a problem, as this disrupted flow of water over her rudder thus making any turning almost non existent. so the decision had been taken to delete it altogether and block the stern tube and that gave room to increase the size of the rudder toward the rear of the Keel giving a balanced rudder.

Also after not taking enough ballast to weight her to the waterline she sat high which meant she was prone to wind conditions and dipping her paddle thus incurring a turn so i will take my roll of lead to get her sitting rite!!

The motor is a Graupner 720 Torque on a chain drive to the paddleshaft this proved a great setup pulling about an amp at cruising speed she is overpowered but rather that than not having enough to avoid trouble!

Overall she sailed well and looked very pretty on the water pictures will follow once i have her setup and maybe a video will be placed on Youtube
 :D
