Hello Paddleducks.
I am a keen ship modeller in paper at 1:250 scale and have recently made my first venture into radio control sail with a Footy sailing boat.
In the Autumn a friend gave me a copy of G H Deason's Simple Cardboard Models and I have been looking at an just resisting the paddle tug Anglia published in this book. Well I have started on the hull mould and think it's time to learn more of paddles steamers and paddle wheels.
In everyday life I am the industrial archaeologist for a large landlocked north of England county which although limited in the occurrence of paddle steamers nonetheless has much innovative Victorian engineering and an extensive canal network.
I look forward to sharing my (all to limited) knowledge and learning plenty from the dedicated enthusiasts here.

I'm sure you'll find all you need here...I certainly have in the last 8 months since joining.
I too live in that landlocked county but very close to the sea!
I look forward to any pictures you post for the numerous projects that you will undertake?!!

Thanks for the welcome. From the Google map of your location you are quite close to me, just over a few hills. We may even pass through on a day trip tomorrow!
I have spent plenty of time both as an archaeologist and day tripper in your neck of the woods.

Welcome from another 'newbie', there were paddlers on canals evidenced by this:
Paddle wheel propelled narrow boat, Kennet and Avon Canal
It is not unusual to encounter stern paddle wheel boats on this particular canal, but this was the only side-paddler I saw. Named 'Charlotte Dundas', it obviously would not be usable on canals with 7ft locks.
Mind you, were it a stern wheeler then you could manage a 7' lock and just think how simple it would be to construct the hull !!!

Hi PD's...........kazarka .... :whistle ....the 'Charlotte Dundas' is a well documented vessel..........but a little different in construction :hammer & age to the image as referred here........
Still..... worth talking about :gathering ....as she appears to be a 1/2 barge or and 1/2 self propelled side wheeler........for river work but .....:shhh......Derek

LOL 'DD', good to see a sense of humour on PDs, I realise you are somwhat deprived down there, not many canals around :darn We are fortunate in that canals are in fact the perfect place for trying out our models . . . . after all no risk of the thing getting out of range :goodnews . . . . providing your willing to follow along the towpath !

Hi David, welcome to Paddleducks. The reference to paddlers on canals I can confirm. In the seventies/eighties I saw a "quarter wheel" paddle propelled narrowboat called "JETHRO TULL" nearly in your neck of the woods at Wigan pier on an inland waterways association rally. I did take a photo but I,ve no idea where it is now :(

I stand corrected. I was sure JETHRO TULL wqas a quarterwheeler but I see from the flicker photo she was in face a full sternwheeler. Great to see her again.

To all who have replied and welcomed me a big thanks.
January was a busy family month with lots of birthdays, family visits and not much model building.
Nonetheless I have made a little progress on Deason's Anglia and have managed to make a gum strip hull!
It is surprisingly stiff and true - for me at any rate. After marking the water line, deck and bulwarks with a pencil line I glued in a ledge to hold the deck. I established the position from the deck line marked on the exterior by pricking through the hull and then glued on strips of 1/4th by 1/16th card (see attachments). Weather and half-term activities willing I will start the varnishing soon.
Still fettling the deck but it seats quite well if not 100% yet.
I also pulled the Meccano out from under the stairs and built a prototype "power-egg". I suspect Meccano will be the mainstay of the mechanicals due to my non-existent engineering skills! Any objection to using a Meccano's 6v motor and large pulley wheel to provide the oomph? The motor comes with a base and screw holes. I had originally thought of using the clockwork motor but doubt the little Anglia has sufficient bouncy.
On the subject of canals I have no knowledge of paddle wheelers on the Aire and Calder, Leeds Liverpool or Calder and Hebble, Rochdale Canals but that's just my limited knowledge and the lack of historic photographs? Presumably the early "packet boats" were paddlers? I have heard of paddle steamer engines being manufactured in Yorkshire.
And finally; I suppose I should move or link this post to a construction thread?

Hi David,
No objections to Meccano, I usually work most of my mechanisms out with it. I then usually replicate the mechanisms with other gear adding bearings etc.
