Title: PS in Pjöngjang
Post by: andy on January 01, 2012, 02:54:46 AM
Hello,

I´ve found the replica of this river ELBE Paddleship in North Korea. Google Maps, "Pjöngjang" and then scrolling the river down, left bay beneath the island with this stadion and the left bay. Coordinates: 39.020422 and 125.756967.

Is known, if this ship was equipped with steam or diesel engine?

She is diesel=powered as far as I know
The story is that Kim Il Sung visited East Germany in 1984, had a sail on DRESDEN, and said "I like this, make me one the same".
I don't know if she was originally steam and was re-engined or was built as a diesel. She was built in 1986 and is named PYONGYANG NR 1; there was originally to be a fleet of them but she was the only one built

PV Pyongyang 1:
In 1984, the then president of North Korea, Kim Il Sung, travelled on PS Dresden on Elbe River at Dresden (DDR, East Germany).  He was so impressed that he ordered a replica to be built for service in North Korea.  DDR cooperated by providing the plans.  I haven't been able to find the place of construction, or the initial propulsion.  Diesel seems more likely than steam.
The vessel was named Pyongyang 1, and was intended to be the first of a fleet, but no more were built.  It entered service in 1986, plying on Taedong River to an amusement park.
It has since had the propulsion and funnel removed.  The upper deck has been enclosed in a mismatched style.  The vessel is moored in a central portion of the river, with landscaped banks, between Kim Il-sung Square on one side, and Juche Tower on the other.  It is used as a static floating restaurant.
It is moored between two large floating restaurants, which can move, but are constrained by bridges.  There are also smaller cruise ferries nearby.
