Title: Pictures of Yukon Stern Wheel Steam Boats Nenana and Klondike
Post by: MatthewDS on September 25, 2011, 07:18:43 AM
I took a road trip last week up to Whitehorse and Fairbanks, and took a bunch of pictures of the SS Klondike and the SS Nenana..  I have put the albums up on picasa if anybody is interested.

SS Nenana:

SS Klondike:

My long term plan is to build a model of the Nenana, but that is far in the future.  Right now I'm just collecting plans and photographs to help with the process.  I have a partial set of plans for the Nenana which I hope to be able to share at some point in the future, and I am seeking plans of the Klondike from a member on this forum.

My interest in these boats is not only that they are part of the local history, but also that mid 20th century steam ships appear to be largely ignored by the live steam community.  I'm particularly interested in the steam engines in these boats which do not appear to have been built as models.

Anyway, the albums:

Enjoy!

Hi Matthew,
Very nice sets of photos you have there. I'm sure members will find them very helpful.
It's a pity there arn't more old paddlers photo collections available of all the ones still around, because once they are gone, they are gone. Then the scrabble for documentation begins in ernest, but then its to late
Happens here in NZ all the time. There have been a few valiant soles in the past who have documented and photographed, so we still have some record, but the rest just slip into history

Many years ago I worked with another National Park Service historian to write a National Historic Landmark nomination for Nenana.  Perhaps the photos and footnotes may prove helpful.

Kiwi,
there are 2 good books , one dealing with steamers in Ontario , Canada titled Northern Steamboats  (Timiskaming, Nipissing, & Atitbiti) by Richard Tatley, and another titled  Yukon River Steamboats, a pictorial history by Stan Cohen --4.00$ at

Matthew and Kevin,
you both deserve commendation for your efforts.
NZ is sadly lacking in such resources
cheers
