Title: Links and cranks
Post by: kiwimodeller on July 13, 2011, 08:45:00 PM
Evenin all, Just picked up my new sternwheeler hull from Harry, more of that and some photos in the days to come but I have started mocking up what goes where and how I will do the drive system. The plan at the moment is to drive from the two single cylinder oscillating engines to a cross shaft at about deck level, either with nylon gears or chains and sprockets. I would then like to run cranks on the end of the shaft (outside the superstructure) with links to identical cranks on the wheel shaft. The cranks at the cross shaft will be hidden by dummy engines. I am sure I read a post recently about cranks and links, phasing etc but I am blowed if I can find it now. Can anybody point me in the right direction? Thanks, Ian.

Take a look at the following topic Ian, it may help?

Hi PD's.... :whistle ....kiwimodeller.....late in Y2010, under a different thread.... ir3 had started a Saito Delta Queen kit build  :hammer using a Saito Y2DR horizontal engine ....

http://www.paddleducks.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=5497.msg29690#msg29690

It may be worth re-reading his progress on the same drive issues ....."links to identical cranks on the wheel shaft"

One major difference is that you may need to reduce the output final shaft speed of your pair of oscillators.....although with suitable gearing this should not pose a real problem as the final paddle wheel smooth rotation & RPM is the goal   :41

You could PM him & ask on progress.......keep us posted.....Derek :coffee

Thanks for that both, it was the older one that Eddy mentioned that I was thinking of but I did not realsie it was a 2007 posting with a link to it, I was looking for recently updated ones. The other posting is where I first got started thanks Derek.
