My current shipbuilding project. Unnhistorical toy. Inspired by the 3D renderings of Will o' the Wisp (http://www.flickr.com/photos/36584779@N05/sets/72157622407852304/detail/)
Hull lines based on PS "Britanny" (http://www.paddleducks.co.uk/smf/index.php?action=downloads;sa=view;down=350). I'm just stretched it to the ratio of waterline length to width. In my project this value is 9. For "Will O'the Wisp" this value in a variety of sources 9 or 10. "Britanny" - 7.7.
Hull - plywood frame covering papier-mache.
Current state - layout and assembly mechanisms.
-
I have to admit that the Will O'the Wisp is a very attractive looking ship! I hope you'll keep us posted on your progress?
Regards
Eddy

Construction of hull.
Plywood frames and papier-mache shell.
The top layer of paper also simulates a sheet cladding.
-
RC-system donor. Made in China.
-
This is getting more and more interesting. I can't wait to see what you post next.
Don
-
Drive system - drive belt and pulleys - from the V-ONE RRR Chassis Kit (http://www.kyosho.com/eng/products/rc/detail.html?product_id=100238)

Current state :-\
-
Looking good there, always nice to see your updates
-
Too slow progress. Now I'm wiring LED lighting - navigation lights and some cabins
-
Device of satan - engine control system. :crash Third variant. It can two commands - "Forward" and "Stop".
-
Hi there
Nice work on an interesting subject.
There seems to be a degree of interest in ACW blockade-runners in the group!
I've never come across papier-mache as a hull material before but it sounds a really great idea..what do you use to seal/waterproof/harden the final hull?
Cheers...Bernie
-
Hi, :)
In this hull I use PVA glue for assembly frames and layers of shell. Than finished it with epoxy. About this technology
http://translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl=en&sl=ru&tl=en&u=http://yomi.hut1.ru/BoxVessels/index.html (http://translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl=en&sl=ru&tl=en&u=http://yomi.hut1.ru/BoxVessels/index.html)
and
http://www.paddleducks.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=5065.0 (http://www.paddleducks.co.uk/smf/index.php?topic=5065.0)
And also I'm read about using silicate adhesive. (http://translate.google.co.uk/translate/ (http://translate.google.co.uk/translate?hl=en&sl=ru&tl=en&u=http://ru.wikipedia.org/wiki/%D0%A1%D0%B8%D0%BB%D0%B8%D0%BA%D0%B0%D1%82%D0%BD%D1%8B%D0%B9_%D0%BA%D0%BB%D0%B5%D0%B9) and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_silicate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sodium_silicate))
It does not require finish with epoxy or another waterproof and harden material. This glue, as I read, using also for hull of submarine models from 60's.

Installation of the upper deck
-
Engine and RC done. Now superstructures and masts
-
Looks very nice...well done!!!
I'm interested in your 'devil' speed/direction controller design as I'm thinking of using electromechanical now in my 'Presto'. I like the mast head lights...I might go for those too.
Cheers......Bernie
-
Light and nice build--The Civil War sure produced so many innovative designs - on the sea- under the sea and on the battle field!! Is your parquet floor in 4" squares? So your hull is about 22" long?
-
Thank you.
The mast head lights - it is a JST-female + LED
The speed controller - foto in built progress: http://karopka.ru/bitrix/components/bitrix/forum.interface/show_file.php?fid=315141 (http://karopka.ru/bitrix/components/bitrix/forum.interface/show_file.php?fid=315141)
The hull lenght is about 32,5'' ( 83,5 cm ). width - 3,5'' (9 cm).
The floor - linoleum with 6,5'' "parquet" square
:D
-
Work in progress.
-
Looks great....and I just love the flares on the funnel tops!!!
-
LED lights testing
-
Plan :crash
-
Last project - lifeboats for my ship. It was the main subject of my construction at last two week. And now I know how it make. Not excellent, but on the right way. As I think.
At attached pictures, you can see the plan that I used for the last variant of lifeboats. Also you can see the previous variant - #1 (hull) and #2 (form for the hull). At the same pictures #4 clear lifeboats hull, and #3 - planked with paper strips.
-
Really nice work which I ducked on my boat....but....
...now I see yours I think I'll replace the Graupner plastic modern-profile ones I have used!
Thanks for a very valuable idea.
Cheers........Bernie

Small update
-
Hi there
Looks really very nice indeed...definitely has the 'feel'.
Has she had her maiden voyage yet?
And...you must be planning your next one by now??...
Cheers......Bernie
-
Thank you.
No she has not had her maiden voyage yet. Some part of engine and RC was removed and not finished. Actually, superstructures and funnels not fixed on his places. They standing there only for photo.
I have one unfinished experimental project. It's not about paddle steamer.
-
The masts fixed on its places. Finished rudder mechanism. Also at during the last two week finished and tested main engine.
-
Hi PD's.......just a minor point Taifoon78... :whistle ..we should no be able to see the green port side light when viewing from a starboard side angle.......
Possibly the LEDs'need to be tucked in close :hammer to the right angled corner.......Derek :coffee
-
Yes. You are right, derekwarner_decoy. It's don't like me to. I should make it right way from the beginning.
-
During the last time I have some problem with engine and accumulator battery. The engine was too weak, and I replaced it with more powerfull one. But battery I will replace in the future.
Also I was forced to improve the rudder-control system. Previouse scheme was not so good in the water.
And during the construction, I was made mistake with weights placement. The stern too deeper in water. Not as I expected.
Today was the first sea trial. The wether was fine for this event. No wind, and no waves.

A small video from sea trial:

Lively model and nice looking sailing site.
Regards,
Gerald.
-
Thank you, friends. :D
Rigging, lifeboats and anchors set on its places. New battery in a fore boiler room.
She looks like "Will-O'the-Wisp"+"Britanny"+"Presto"+"Connaught".
-
.....and very nice to see her carrying the Russian flag!!!!
What is the other flag please?
Cheers........Bernie

Hi all!
Some photo from last weekend. It was the sea trial with a gale (wind 7 meters per second and big waves on the water). And after this was a small photosession in shallow puddle.

Hi there
She looks really great in the repaint and very nice action photos too.
I presume that the plans and keel/hull sections are for a new model?
Cheers...Bernie

Yes. You are right :) She will be a new "ocean going" paddle steamer.
-
OK......I look forward to your further progress with that.

She's looking great!!!!
It looks like you are using hardwood so far?...I'd be interested in what type you are using.
Happy Xmas and a prosperous New Year.
Cheers...Bernie
-
Thank you :)
Yes. You are right. In this hull I used pine planks 2x2mm and 2x10mm for stringers, 3x4mm for keel. For frames, stem and stern-post I use a 1mm plywood. It made possible to use a scissor for cuting frames. Also for stern and stem I used a balsa wood plank.
Happy Xmass and a New Year.
-
Great Idea!!!
Where did you source such small thickness pine wood? My guess is you cut/planed it for yourself?
Good Luck for 2014
Cheers...Bernie
-
Happy New Year!
I had a luck to find a bit of this wood in one small modeling shop in my town. It is an components for building a planes models. In another case, I will forced to cut a planks from a wooden rulers or buy it is in the internet or order it is in a carpentry workshop. In this case it will be a few expensive and аlso it will take a little more time.

Looking really good and...you have a pair!!
-
Thank you. I use the same technology.
And here you can see paddle boxes frames
-
So there are 2 ... great ... look forward to future build pics.
-
I had find my first paddle steamer. And now you can see three generation of my paddle steamers on one photo. )))
-
First time afloat. The hull was varnished.
And the hull before varnish.
-
And here you can see how the project was redesigned.
-
Looking very nice and also good to see the 3 generations.
What are the paddle wheels you are using please?
-
Some years ago I had a luck to laser cut the some pairs of wheels from acrylic plastic. This wheels is a little bit fragile. They have a seven paddles. And a width near 25 mm and diameter near 90 mm.
