Title: Gear wheels?
Post by: Eddy Matthews on October 23, 2010, 07:49:31 AM
Does anyone know where I can get brass gear wheels?

I need two approx 72mm diameter, and one approx 36m diameter - Those sizes aren't critical, just something around that size would do. But I need them to be fairly thick - Say 4mm-6mm. Oh, it's spur gears I require....

I'm sure a source exists, but I'm blowed if I can find one!

Any help would be appreciated...

Eddy

Eddy
You might try S.H.Muffett Ltd. They make gears in around the sizes you want in brass, steel and various plastics. The latest phone No. I have is 01892 532900. There are other firms, but for decent machined gears I've always found Muffetts to be the most reasonably priced.

Thanks Malcolm,

I've sent an email to S H Muffet to get prices, so we'll see what happens.... At least they actually list what I need!

I got prices from Muffetts for the three gearwheels I need - Although they aren't cheap, they aren't as expensive as I thought they would be!!

The 3 gears will cost £56.56 including VAT and carriage.

Many thanks Malcolm...

Hi Pd's....... :gathering ...Eddy  :goodluck it is OK to use gearing....but the structural setup with the axis of each gear train & intermeshing chordial distance is critical  :c002

.....£56.56 for gears + £256.56 for a box to hold the gears ? :a102 ...... :sorry ....Derek

Hi Eddy. I seem to remember John Cantwell bring an enormous box of reclaimed gears to  the club- perhaps you could ask him and you may save yourself a great deal of money!. Regards, Walter.

hi , i cant help w gear wheels , but , could you substitute w a toothed belt set up ??
i fit the motor+gear train, a combination of comercial gear boxes(robbe)+graupner gear sets , to give me a double reduction , i then fit this in the bottom of the hull, then run a tooth belt up to the paddle shaft .you can tension this belt by a idle pulley , or slot the mount holes -i tend to use HTD metric belts , as these are better than MXL imperial belts , resulting in 300/350rpm at the paddle shaft, motor is either 540/545/550/555, thus allowing massive tuning of revs
