Title: Waverley & Jeanie Deans
Post by: Talisman on August 23, 2010, 06:17:35 AM
My computer died at the begining of the week meaning that all my efforts this week have been hand done.
An expense & hassle i really could have done without right now but did mean there was nothing to distract me and let me get on with preparing for next weekends trade show (Birchwood model boat show & Model boat convention)

I'm not sure how far i will get with them before Thursday but thought i'd show some pics of what i have achieved so far. (doesn't look much given the time and effort)

Your right Eddy, Padddle wheels & windows can have a short break.  :06
I'm really looking forward to getting on with the superstructures, only a couple more windows to do & they will be lasered so should be a nice change.

Hi Kim,
That must have taken a while! I know windows are a lot of effort.... interesting to compare the two hulls in your last pic.

Today i got off to a great start cut the stern on the Jeanie deans down and added deck supports etc. all done by 8.30 am ... great should be a good day...
Then I took the dog out for a walk to get rid of his energy so i would get peace to continue ....... that's when the day started going pear shaped ... dog decided to do a spot of what i guess was break dancing (I'm told its called street dancing now by the kids ...) in some rabbit poo ...... marvelous!

Anyway long story short all i have managed to achieve in between several other unplanned interuptions is start painting the hull which in turn just led to more questions ....

So here we go my achievements today

38 x Stern Window inserts for Jeanie Deans

1 x Clean dog

Better luck tomorrow....

Here we go gain ...

well after a nights sleep and a morning of looking at pics i have decided to do the Jeanie and Waveley in 1936 colours.
So really I'm looking for confirmation / corrections on the main colours -

Beaneath water line - Crimson?
Mid Hull - Grey
Upper hull - White
Deck houses - White
Deck house roofs - (i have read somewhere but can't put my finger on it this morning) that the deck house roofs were red. Is that Crimson red or more red oxide?

Any help with colours would be great.
Regards,
Kim

Hi Kim,
One fairly poor quality colour pic I have of Waverley in 1935-39 livery seems to show reddish (oxide) colour on the top of the paddle drums & possibly the water channels at the wooden deck edge would be the same colour.
At the very top of the hull above the windows there is a narrow band of colour....hard to say if red or brown though.
Seems to be the same band of colour at the very top edges of the deckhouses also.
The roof of the lifejacket locker on the aft deckhouse looks red oxide also, but i would guess the roofs of the deckhouses would just be the wooden planking.
The belting/waist rope areas look like the same red oxide.
There seems to have been subtle variations on this livery from ship to ship, I have seen the Jeanie & others with a 6-9" white strip at waterline between red and grey. In other pics there is no white strip.
Maybe others could elaborate/correct me, thats just how it looks to me. Will see if I can find any written description of the scheme.

Nice choice though sure they will look great in grey :D

Hi All,
Clark many thanks for info.

Well a much better day today. I managed to get a full day of drawing with breaks to apply paint to the hulls.
After dinner I gave in to temptation and built a wee bit this eve.
Pic of Jeanie Deans Stern house so far.

Kim

Good to hear you had a better day Kim, that rear section is looking good.  are the benches laser cut?  i ask as i see a blackish tinge in the slats.

Hi,
It's all Laser cut and assembled as it comes off the cutter to give an idea of the finish. A little bit of filler would obviously tidy it up.
Cheers
Kim

Great progress Kim. Need to pick up some tips on the CNC side.
Some of the best tips and instructions I have found are in books by Peter Smid, I just bought a copy for our Model Engineering group of his CNC Programming Handbook by Peter Smid 3ed. (I have a copy of the 2nd ed for myself).  I wish that his books had been around when I was first learning CNC.

Gerald.

Hi All,
I received what I'm guessing is a pretty rare colour photo of Jeanie Deans in the period I'm modelling her on.
The photo shows her as having a Salmon pink rather than a crimson colour bellow the water line.
(I'm sorry the photo does not belong to me and i have no rights to public display :(  )

My questions are - which spraypaint  (preferably) do you guys use for Salmon pink?
The easiest way to remove enamel from grp  :'(
Many thanks,
Kim

Hi Kim,
I know the shade you mean, unfortunately I don't think its a car colour, although worth a look in halfords.
I'm having the same problem finding a faded green.
Also I have experimented with Plastikote pink, but its too pink.
Remember the guy who built the PS Glen Sannox recently? (on Mayhem I think) He has the shade you need on her underside...maybe he could help/advise

Clark

Hi Clark,
Thanks for the help, I have just returned from B&Q with a tin of Japlac Satin Tea Rose which, when applied to a dark undercoat is an acceptable match.

Typical when i was looking for Crimson i struggled and now looking for Pink i can see every shade of Crimson lol

Kim
