Lachie Stewart is up and running again, with the Maid of the Loch this time. Pictured with the fibreglass hull moulded from his own plug. Hope to add pictures as the build progresses.

What is the scale? Looks about 6ft in the photos. Geoff

Apologies for delay in replying. Model is to 1:35th scale.
Work is progressing as can be seen in new photographs but the appalling weather here in Scotland has delayed balancing trials and I believe that Lachie is going ahead with the deck in the meantime. He has slowed up a bit in the last week or so due to preparation work to sail his Bismark at the 2010 National warship weekend. As you can see the hull is painted and looking good.

It's a pity Lachie cannot take part in the forum, I'm sure he would have a lot to add!
The Maid of the Loch is certainly looking very good! :clap

Exciting news :goodnews Lachie trimmed and sailed the hull of the Maid today on a beautiful sunny day at Lomond Shores. Very crowded with power boats, jet skis etc., full size that is, but everything went well. The only real adjustment was to correct a slight bow down trim, evident at the start of the video. After this had been corrected she handled very well. The area around the slipway doesn't allow for easy turning and he was itching to get out onto the Loch proper but I played damp squib and persuaded him that caution was the better part of valour. ::) His Flying Fulmar was on hand, powered up, ;) just in case.

that's a lovely looking Maid and a very nice video. :clap

Andy,
She is looking great and hasn't taken long to get to present stage, I'm impressed.
Thing that puts me off a Maid of the Loch is the quarter spiral Staircase on each side. I would be very interested to hear how Lachie goes about them.
I also like the funnel construction.
Thanks to both of you for sharing.

Kim

Lachie's Maid is coming on very nicely. He was out in very windy conditions recently and had some problems steering but has subsequently had outings in calmer conditions where she handles very well. Some photographs with video to follow when I get around to processing the huge backlog of various clips I have amassed over the summer.

Out again on Thursday and perfect conditions for sailing (Unfortunately still problems in transporting Connaught to the water >:() but Lachie's Maid looked superb. Steering in these conditions is not a problem and she handles very well. He has lightened her slightly and trimmed her down a little at the stern which seems to have helped no end. She also seems to steer better at a slightly lower speed, probably approaching scale speed. He has fitted most of the rail cappings and it's amazing the difference this makes.
Guess not many people can sail their creations against the backdrop of the real thing. ;)
I'm still trying to get him to use a computer so that he can pass on his expertise direct but to no avail so far.
Stuart. He was absolutely entranced the minute he laid eyes on Connaught and waxed long and lyrical about the build quality.
Video at long last! ::)

Please keep plugging away at Lachie, Andy.... I'm sure he has an absolute mine of information that would be useful to the Paddleducks members!
Not only his techniques for building, but his general knowledge of paddlers on the Clyde and the surrounding areas. It would be a crying shame if we missed out on that!
For someone that isn't used to computers, a website can be a daunting place at first, but please tell him I'm more than happy to explain things so he won't be on his own wondering what the hell to do!

Superb film. A real pleasure to watch. Thank you for showing us

Lachie had his Maid out again last week. Masts, davits, boats, ventilators and lots of other detail added. Looking really good.
In reply to a question from Kim I believe that he plans to cut the treads for the spiral staircases over-length, drill a hole corresponding to the centre of the well, assemble on a mandrill which will be withdrawn once the staircase is built and then cut off the excess tread. Sounds a reasonable plan to me. He has ordered the chequer plate but hadn't started the stairs last time I spoke to him.
Lots of pics and a new video.
Pictures are on Photobucket. Click on URL and not thumb to view.

Does Lachie ever sail at Richmond Park?
All the best

I believe Lachie is a member of Richmond and occasionally sails there.

Good to see Lachie has built her in the CSP colours, I don't like her black hull.
-
Nice models of the "Maid". I must say that I don't mind the black hull, if they got rid of the thick gold stripe. (and give her a nice buff/black funnel!) I'm sure she had a black top to her funnel as built, but it was changed to all buff before she entered service.

Couldn't agree more about the funnel but the present colour scheme is more tourist and publicity friendly apparently.
Out with Lachie and his friend Ian yesterday on a perfect sunny and calm day at Lomond Shores. Couldn't resist posting this shot which I think highlights how good this model is turning out.

Awesome photo :-D
Much prefer the white/buff/green colours, all the others preserved ship in the UK have black hulls, this gives the Maid something special all its own....
-
Lachie was up last week to show me progress on the spiral staircases. His original plan of extending the treads to place on a mandrell has proved not practical as the staircases are apparently not a concentric spiral. He has warped the sides by hand to fit and then glued in chequer plate treads. Looks good to me and I look forward to seeing them complete and in position on the model.

A nice bit of work there....I find normal stairs hard enough :D
-
Those damned spiral staircases are the one thing that's always put me off building a model of the Maid....
Lackie has a lot more patience than I have!! ;)

Not specifically Lachie's model of the Maid but it does feature prominently. A perfect day's sailing in November..... a distant memory in recent conditions.

Some recent photographs. Lachie, perverse as ever, decided to go sailing on a morning dominated by freezing fog. The album contains some shots of the frost on the rigging.
He has cracked on and the model is all but finished. The spiral staircases are fabricated and in place, lighting installed and working and a full complement of passengers and crew. Some rather sinister looking characters on board and turns out they are from a set of Gestapo figures.
Click on the URL below to access the album on Photobucket, the index picture itself is not itself is not 'live' link.

Some more photographs of Lachie's Maid sailing at Lomond Shores before the current 'greyness' set in. His KG V also appears in several of the shots. The model is essentially finished but he has added some more passengers recently.
I know I've said it before but it gives an added buzz to sailing with the full size Maid as a backdrop.
