The 2010 Paddler Day will take place at Darlington & District MBC, at The Waterpark, Middleton-St-George, Near Darlington, County Durham, England, on Sunday 19th September 2010, between 10am and 6pm....
This is a totally unique event in the modelling calendar, where those who like to model paddlers can show off their models both on and off the water. Last year we had well over 40 paddlers, and 2010 will be the fourth year we have staged this event. Lets see if we can crack 50 models this time! Even if you don't have a model to display or sail, just come along and chat with the guys sailing their models to see what the fascination with paddlers is - You won't regret it and you'd be very welcome.
As usual, drinks, food, toilet facilities, indoor and outdoor display areas are all available, as well as the bring & buy stall to sell or purchase those odds and ends. 10% commission payable by the seller on all succesful sales...
Models can be dropped off at the lakeside, but we do ask that you then move your vehicle to the carpark, which is only 100yds away, to keep the area clear. Limited disabled parking is available for those with real difficulties, so please ask when you arrive, or pre-book a space by contacting Eddy Matthews at eddy.matthews@paddleducks.co.uk
This year we will have our first trader attending the show - Clyde Model Boats, who specialise in paddlers, will be there with their wares. Apart from the normal materials, tools, adhesives, fittings etc, they also do a superb range of paddlewheel kits in etched brass and simpler styrene wheels, so if the paddlewheels are the only bit that's stopping you from building a paddler, you now have no excuse! They have also released the first of a range of semi-kits which will be added to over the coming year or so.
A special attraction will be a model of the paddler RMS Connaught, which is being brought by it's builder Stuart Badger, all the way from Greece!! Now there's dedication! The model is magnificent at around 9 feet long, so it's definitely one not to miss!
A Special Prize of a hull and a set of plans for the Marchioness of Lorne (1:48 scale) has been donated by Kim Maclean (Talisman) from www.ClydeModelBoats.co.uk Everyone that brings a model paddler to the show will be given a raffle ticket (free), and one will be drawn out of the hat at the end of the day - So bring a model, and be in with a chance to win a hull and plans, absolutely FREE!
At around 4pm there will be a short break for the various awards to be made, Best Model on the Water, Best Steam powered model, and Best novelty paddler. Plus any other prizes or announcements that are deemed necessary.

Only 5 months to go..... It may sound like a long way off, but if your building a paddler to come to the show the time will just fly by!!
We hope to see even more people there this year, and so far we've increased the numbers of people attending every year, so there's no reason that this year shouldn't be even bigger and better than previous shows....
For those that are coming a long way, and staying at a local hotel or B&B, there are normally a few of us that go for a curry on the saturday evening before the show, just let me know a couple of weeks before the big day so I can book the table! - hey if Stuart and his wife Ros can make it from Greece, and Hans and Joerg from Switzerland, there's no excuse for the rest of you! :)
Also remember we also run a Bring & Buy to sell all those unwanted odds and ends - It could finance your trip, so it has to be worth thinking about!

Hi PDs!
After a fair few trials and tribulations Connaught leaves for the UK on Sunday. She will be travelling by van across Greece to Patras, from there by ferry to Ancona in Italy and then on up through Europe to Calais across the Channel to Dover and onward to Darlington.
The lid was screwed on the box at 2 oclock today ready for the trip. See you on Paddler day!

Mind you, you might like one of the comments made by the guy that will be storing it for you Stuart, he asked (tongue in cheek) if it would be okay to store it standing on end in his garage so he still has room for all his motorcycles :hehe

You'll be pleased to know that I've been over to Darlington where the model is stored. I took the top off the shipping crate, as Stuart asked, to check it over and remove some packing. And it appears to be in excellent condition, no obvious damage anywhere.....
Pretty amazing considering it's just done a journey from Greece!

i will tell you all a sad news, after three times at the Darlington paddler day this time i can't come i am so sorry but i hope you will understand it.
As most of you know i am working for the Sauber Formula1 Team, a few weeks a go Mr. Sauber told us there will be a visitor day in our factory very unusual for an F1 Team. The sad thing is the date, 18.th. of September and as a saying goes in Germany, i can not dance on every wedding. So i had to decide where to go and i chose the visitor day because i like to show my workplace and everything around to my girlfriend and some other friends. One problem is, this visitorday was normally every second year but i these days who knows what will be in two years.
Please don't blame me for my decision, i will be back next Year.

Hans told me a few weeks ago that he couldn't come to this years Paddler Day - He will be greatly missed!!
Over the years Hans and I have become very good friends and we try to meet up whenever he comes to the UK.
But next year I hope we'll see Hans and his girlfriend Beate both sailing their models on the lake.... Beate has been building her own paddler, so there's no excuse now :)

Only two weeks to go until Paddler Day 2010
So if your coming along to the show, please remember to tell your fellow clubmates about it. Maybe post something on your club noticeboard? Not everyone has internet access, so please tell them that the event is on!
The more the merrier, but remember that it's paddlers only on the water, apart from maybe the last hour when we generally allow anything to sail.
Lets make this the biggest and best Paddler Day yet!

Can I just remind everyone that there will be a "Bring & Buy" stall in operation, so if you have any stuff you want to get rid of please bring it along - 10% comission payable by the seller on all succesful sales.
It doesn't have to be paddler related, or even model stuff - If you think someone might be interested, bring it along!
I know already that there will be a few tugs for sale, a German Schnellboot, and a trawler....

Can I just remind everyone that (as always) there will be a small cafe in operation at the show - Pie and peas, sausage sandwiches, cold sandwiches, biscuits, crisps, cakes, and tea and coffee will be available. And NOT at the rip off prices some places charge!
All profits go to our club to help to pay for the event - We normally only make a very marginal profit, so your support is appreciated!

Is there anyone else that would like to come along for a curry on saturday night before the Paddler Day?
I need to know so I can book a table...
The bill will be split equally amongst us rather than trying to calculate exactly what each person owes - It's much simpler that way, and there will be an additional £2-£3 per person to cover the tip. Drinks should be paid for as you get them, and not added to the bill.
I will happily meet you at your hotel/B&B and guide you in to the restaurant if you tell me where you are staying, but I already have a full car so you will need to follow in your own....
The meal will be booked for 7pm-7:30pm.
I think that covers everything, so if you want to join us please let me know - I cannot gaurantee that people who decide to come at the last minute can be catered for.

Well, another long day is now over. Sadly the weather wasn't very good with constant drizzle and some spells of heavier rain during the morning, but things did improve during the afternoon, so the attendance was down on previous years - Not surprising really, as I'm sure a lot of people would have looked at the forecast and decided not to make a long journey!
Anyway, we still had our normal good turnout from Scotland, and others from various parts of the UK. Stuart Badger and his wife Ros made the trip over from Naxos in Greece - A supreme effort by them to attend a small model boat show!
In all we probably had 24-25 models present, and most of them got on the water at one point or another, especially during the afternoon.
Stuarts model of the RMS Connaught sailed majestically almost the entire day, with various people taking the transmitter, and yes I was one of the lucky ones who got a turn at the sticks! ;)
Kim Maclean (Talisman) and his wife Susan came down from Glasgow as Kim wanted to sail some of his paddlers, and whilst they were there they setup a small display stand to show off some of the products that they do under the name of Clyde Model Boats. Although the numbers that attended were down, they still seemed to do a reasonable trade throughout the day.
Everyone that came was asked to vote for the model they considered to be Best model on the water, and Stuarts model of the Connaught won hands down - Not surprisng really as it was just magnificent!
Everyone that registered to sail got a raffle ticket, and at the end of the day the raffle was drawn. The prize was a hull and a set of drawings for the Marchioness of Lorne, which was kindly donated by Clyde Model Boats. I beleive I'm right in saying that it was won by Pete Ritchie, but I'm sure someone will correct me if I've got that wrong!
So, a long tiring day that didn't get off to the best start weather wise, but in the end things improved and everyone that did come seemed to enjoy it..... So here's to next years event, which will be our 5th show - Who said paddlers weren't popular?!

Given that the weather wasn't very good, I think the turnout was better than most of us had thought. Next year we'll have sunshine I promise! :hehe
I'll look forward to seeing you all again next year - Even Stuart might join us again from Greece if his health allows it. Thankfully he got a bit of good news from the hospital on friday to say things were better than the doctors had thought, so he may have more time than they first said.

An excellent day and many thanks to you and the rest of the guys in the club for a very warm welcome. Made good time on the way back up and Connaught is safely installed in Balloch. Haven't unpacked the crate as I was scared of damaging anything in poor light. Will be out first thing in the morning to remove it from its cocoon and bring it indoors. There is a Queue of people waiting to see it.
We all knew that this was going to be something special from the build log but to see it in the flesh, so to speak, was incredible. Like you I got my hands on the transmitter and she handles beautifully, a true lady. Stuart has done a fantastic job and I'm really glad that he achieved his ambition to sail her at Darlington. Fortunate for the rest of us too, I think everyone was enthralled.
As you know my sister and brother travelled to see what all the fuss was about but didn't tell me that they were coming. A lovely surprise and an added bonus as I don't get to see them that often since they migrated South of Hadrian's Wall. They were suitably impressed by Connaught and indeed the rest of the models on display. Both said that you couldn't meet a nicer bunch of people, they were made very welcome. Thanks again for this.

Very many thanks to all of the members of Darlington & District MBC who worked so hard to make the 2010 Paddler Day so enjoyable. The facilities you have are superb but really it's the friendliness of everyone you meet that really makes the day. I too am now going on a diet after all the wonderful food served up by the hard working ladies in the Community Hall and the enormous curry we enjoyed in such great company on Saturday evening.
It is always a pleasure to have our annual live meet with the Thursday evening Skype crowd in person.
This year's event may have been a little smaller than last years because of the weather - or was it that the rest had gone to see the Pope? - but it was made memorable by just seeing Stuart's 'Connaught' gracing the water. That was a moment to remember.
As usual I ended up coming home with yet another boat - Bob's Princess Elizabeth - so will be spending the week getting it up and running for Sunday in Edinburgh. It's probably just as well we didn't have a bigger car with us as a few more might have been making their way North!
Many thanks again to you all for another wonderful day. I'll get some pics posted later.

Just got back to Cornwall in one piece and wanted to say a big 'Thank you' to the club for organising such a great day. It is the first model boat meet I've ever been to and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it. It was so nice meeting such friendly and like-minded people. Connaught had to be the highlight of the day, - closely followed by winning the raffle! (Hate to think what the lady wife will say when she finds out I'm going to build another one!)

Latest on Connaught.
Up early to deliver van back to hire depot. Rushed back to open crate only to be faced by a Murphy's law moment. I need a star screwdriver. I can lay my hands on seven flat blade screwdrivers...........Buuuuut ::) :-[ :o >:(. Eventually get crate opened. ;D.
Lachie arrives hot foot to see the model and helps me take it into the house. True confessions time (sorry Stuart), the lady doesn't fit into my back bedroom and the bowsprit took a knock. With all the delicacy of a dentist operating on a serial killer I managed to extract the bowsprit undamaged and reveal a clean cavity. I reckon I will convert it to removable. Do I exaggerate how tight a fit this model is in the house.? ::) Judge for yourself. ;)
Daughters have been told that on visits home they will have to coexist with my new lady as WELL as my fleet of aircraft.
Bit shattered today so epoxy out tomorrow, batteries on charger and pray for good weather later in the week.
How will I get her down to Lomond Shores? :-\ Truth be told haven't quite worked that out yet so watch this space! :-X

Well we're back home at last - a day late and despite Sleazy Jet's attempts to strand us!

Actually I removed the rudder to make sure the repair to the damage from Darlington is uniform. Other than my stupidity with the bowsprit very little transit damage other than a couple of the boat falls detaching from the davit swivels. Have been away recently and unfortunately back to atrocious weather. Hopefully next week. Current plan is to load her back into the crate and transport down to Lomond Shores on Lachie's trailer. It takes his Bismark so hopefully plenty room for Connaught.

Sadly the turnout was well down on previous years, but that was mainly due to the weather - Hopefully next year will be better, and we look forward to seeing a few new models and faces at the 2011 show.

Having the show a little earlier has been mentioned before Ken, but it's trying to fit it in so it doesn't clash with other events and peoples holidays....
About the best I can suggest would be the last sunday in August, which would make it Sunday 28th August 2011....
Comments are welcome, but please bear in mind that we cannot please everyone!! :(

I had a quick look at the Premier Inn web site and there is accommodation advertised as available and at a lower rate than the following weekend :)

Hello folks. I was talking to Ian (Darlington club secretary) last night and the MPBA have already been in contact for next years date! Incidentaly the normal date we would hold it in September next year coincides with the National scale steering championships though that shouldnt affect us as I dont know many of us who visit the nationals!. regatds, Walter.

Our club secretary, Ian Archibald, submitted a short write up on the 2010 Paddler Day to Model Boats magazine - It appears in the March 2011 issue.
So I hope Model Boats magazine will bear with us as we publish just that one page online, so our members worldwide can see what they missed?
The 2011 Paddler Day is already in the planning stage, and will take place on sunday, September 4th 2011.
