Title: Book review - Dead Reckoning by Jeff Dawson
Post by: Red_Hamish on October 29, 2009, 08:41:15 AM
Hello all, after being on holiday for a week I've just finished reading the paperback book Dead Reckoning which is a reconstruction of the events  prior to and  subsequent consequences of the loss  of the Blue Star Lines Dunedin Star  in  December 1942. The liner foundered off the coast of South West Africa (Namibia) on the skeleton coast after striing eith a  group of mines, a submarine or the MacAlpine reef.  The reef was uncharted at the time but known to be a treacherous obstacle and hazard to shipping. The desolate coast runs for 500 miles and is devoid of settlement. It is a really absorbing read and definitely different to most sea novels that you come across. I hope this might take your fancy even  though there isn't a paddler mentioned  ;)

cheers

Jim
